I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

I say go TS-9 if that is what you are thinking of. you can find em new for about $100 or used for slightly less (they hold value well). the cool thing is that there are a billion mods for the creatures out there, so if you say "this is great, but I wish it had more X", there is someone out there who can either tell you how or do it for you. It's a great buidling block. I have a TS-9 that I sent to Robert Keeley (of the famous Keeley electronics). He gave mine more gain, and more bass response as well as doing the TS808 mods. It cost about $50 if I can remember correctly. Now this beastie along with a wah is all i pipe into my fender amp for wonderful tone from SRV to Pearl Jam (both of which are TS users by the way)

Thanks Lew!This is new territory for me.I just want to push my tube power without blowing out the windows of my house :laugh2: I've been gravitating towards the TS-9 for awhile-now if I can only find a used one.Now who is this John you speak of?

"John" is STRATDELUXER97. He's our resident pedaltweaker who specializes in TS-5, 7, and 9 mods and does them well. He also does wonders with Boss DS-1's and SD-1's as well. I have 3 pedals (TS-5, DS-1, and SD-1) that he's done his evil deeds to, and they produce some very righteous tones. You may want to get in touch with him and get some more ideas.

Ts5 or TS7...for $100 you can buy almost 4 of them. Overdrives are probably the easiest and least complicated circuits to make...no reason you should spend a lot on them. I like my TS7 the best- is the new reissue worth 5 times more? Its an *overdrive*!

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

I'll second the Banzai Fireball, but it's hard to get hold of. A reasonably priced, yet nice pedal is the Boss OD-3.

I have a Tube Factor as well and it's good for transaparent OD lovers.

Barber Direct Drive - it's inexpensive (under one bill) and will function as both a overdrive pedal (pushing the front end of your amp) or as a distortion pedal (gain maxed it sounds very smooth), pull the tone knob up and the tone thickens up and the distortion gets very fat. Can't go wrong with this pedal.

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

Here's my top choices (for what they're worth):
*Barber Direct Drive
*Ibanez TS-808 (for those that want the classic)
*Jacques Tube Blower (if essentially you want a tube screamer, but with more gain, clarity, etc... funny how most people don't know about them)
*Banzai Fireball

those are arguably some of the finest pedals out there. They all provide great tone. Fulltone FDII while a great pedal, you can find better (look at Banzai ;) ).

Of course, the holy grail, the Klon (gold) Centaur still stand. I don't see anything touching that anytime soon and it's pricey, but worth it (when I have the extra cash lying around... I will grab one).

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

My favorite is my Maxon OD-9. Tone nearly identical to a TS-808, but louder, gainier and less $$$.

It's amazing how much difference a good V1 tube and batteries make. I pulled the POS Mesa 12AX7 from V1 and replaced it with a 12AX7EH as well as changing to a good battery in the OD-9. The ice-pick screechy bright overdrive sound is much smoother now.

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

You guys have given some great suggestions to chew on.

Dumb question:I was going to purchase a Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal-Would that be redundant with having an overdrive in my chain of effects?

No, as they are different animals, different eq control layouts, and different clipping structuresthe od in front of the DS-1 complements it nicely. IMO

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

I like the Direct Drive too.
