I picked the WORST mfn day to buy a backup pedal…

As someone who owns a Bad Monkey, I must ask how big a change does the cab sim make? I've tried A/B'ing the mixer out into my amplifier just to try and qualify what all it does, but is a cab sim's effect "overwritten" by an actual cab?

No it is not overwritten, but some speakers/cabs are less susceptible to changes. Certain speakers are EQed, so drastically they tend not to lose their character no matter whatever you put in front of them. Some neutral speakers, like the Eminence Wheelhouse, take on the characteristics of whatever they are fed. If I use the cab sim in my Tech 21 Liverpool with the Marshall, it changes the tone, but it doesn't sound like Bulldog speakers. If I use the pedal with my JC 120 an Eminence Wheelhouse 2x12, the changes are more dramatic. I would also assume that if the cam sim's EQ is similar to your live cab, the changes will not be as noticeable.

To me, it is just a little darker than the main out, and I like that tone a little better.

Digitech Hardwire CM-2 incoming. Sadly, enough people knew these were higher-end versions of the Bad Monkey that they've gotten hard to find in the last week or so but the prices haven't ballooned as bad. A guy over on Talkbass sold me his for 80 and it should be in this afternoon. Hopefully it sounds similar enough with the same tone stack that they will be interchangeable.

Hooray!

Yeah, I think the big difference is supposed to be the CM-2 has a better bypass and less of a midboost. I cannot speak on this, just repeated what I've heard. I've never had any problem with the bypass on my BM and mine is modded to have flat mids.

Well shit. I really wanted them to be the same.

Maybe I can sell my bm to an idiot and buy another CM-2 and a case of beer.

Those CM-2s are supposed to be great pedals. I look forward to the review!

Formula73's totally professional and in-depth review:

It's a Bad Monkey with potentiometer detents and a gnarly switch. I don't need that much dirt for my bass tone so I don't use it.

I like the knob cover. I need to make one for my old russian Muff.

Turns out these became harder to find over the last week than a reasonably priced BM. Oh well.

I find this to be an acceptable backup to my Bad Monkey.
