I have nothing but good things to say about Warmoth. And you can get great deals on things if you wait for sales. I wrote a blog about how I selected parts for mine.

In regards to the super cheap guitar kits...you usually get what you pay for. Also, a lot of the GuitarFetish offerings require more than just slapping a neck on a body...many have imperfections or are slightly off on the measurements and thus require some serious luthier knowledge/ability.

I've been extremely pleased with Warmoth and Musikraft as well as AllParts.

So it isn't necessary to build one when I can buy exactly what I want off the shelf.

+1 Having built 4 partscasters over the years, I've only kept 2 long term and just recently sold the oldest. Resale value is horrid to sale the least. Moving forward, if I can find most of what I want, I will go off the shelf.

However, I think builds truly shine with exotic woods. They cost a bit more than an alder or ash body, but it gives you a ballpark feel for what something else might be like. I went with warmoth and purchased a showcase rosewood/ebony neck to gauge whether I would like a PRS with similar specs. $350 was better than $3500-5500. I still dream for a PRS Artist Package Santana.

If done right, builds are worth it.
