I put a Screamin Demon in the bridge on my Pacifica 112J yesterday.

I found a great deal on a used, covered SH-12 and got it to put in this guitar. I had a Lil '59 in the bridge which is a great pickup, but wanted to try something different. The Screamin Demon is surprisingly more beefy sounding than I would have thought, but I attribute some of that to the cover and also to the 250k volume and tone pots in this guitar. It's not muddy sounding, but I didn't expect it to sound as thick as it does. So far I love it. I may end up changing the volume pot to a 500k, but I'll see how it sounds at band volume as-is before I do that.

im not surprised it sounds beefy with the 250k controls. i find it a bit strident with 500k and im not sure the neck and middle would sound great with that value unless you like a lot of high end

The DiMarzio VV 54 Pro in the neck is a pretty warm sounding stacked single. Much warmer than the Area 61 in the middle. I've got another guitar with the VV 54 in the neck and 500k volume/250k tone pots and it sounds good. Not too bright IMO, so I wouldn't be afraid to try it again.

I happen to love the Demon, in bridge or neck (especially neck). Yes it is definitely beefier sounding than a 59. I like it with a 500k vol pot. Gives it a bit more bite than a 250k.

There's 300k too.

It has a reputation, but it's really not too thin and wiry to use. Some people talk about it as if it's an over-bright single coil, which is far from the case. It's fine with 500k too, but I never perceive as huge of a difference from pot changes as I do from other factors.

Re: I put a Screamin Demon in the bridge on my Pacifica 112J yesterday.

Too many people used to JBs, Blackouts and Super Distortions complain that it sounds thin. Thin compared to what?
It's certainly bigger sounding than any single coil out there, and it has some very specific tonal qualities hard to find elsewhere.

I have one sitting in its box alongside an Alnico 2 Pro, a Custom (brand new!) and a JB. All wonderful pickups but I can't be bothered to solder these days, since I suck so bad at it.
But I really like it! It's got a voice of it's own and it's interesting if you want your guitar to have a distinct attitude.

Is yours a regular spaced or a trembucker?

Hey. Regular, a SH12 and not a TB12. Doesn't really line up in my Ibanez SZ320 but I don't care.
I'd love to try it in my Les Paul but I can't really swap pickups in my Epiphones; they have the Gibson-ready p/p volume pots and I like the way they sound already, so I'm not modifying it.

The Demon is a great choice. I am happy it worked out!

Played it more last night and I'm really liking it in this guitar. I had another SD uncovered in another guitar a while back and it was good, but like a fool I sold it when I put a different pickup in that guitar.

Sweet axe!!!

Excellent choice. Classic with a little sumpin' extra!

I've said this before, but it's thin and weak compared to what the name would imply. The first replacement pickup I ever bought was a Screamin Demon. I told the guy I wanted a loud pickup for metal. He directed me to the SH-12. I said, "It's called the 'Screamin Demon' for god's sake... it's gotta be hot!" Boy, was I disappointed.

Re: I put a Screamin Demon in the bridge on my Pacifica 112J yesterday.

The thing about that is, sometimes less is more. Turning down the gain/switching to a lower output pickup can make you go from sounding like mushy, inaudible white noise to all of a sudden being heard in the mix. Part of me feels like that must have been the intent.

...That said, I don't really like Lynch's tone when he (supposedly) used this pickup, but I find I can make it sound great. Harmonics just flow from it too.

Wouldn't want it to "compress".

Re: I put a Screamin Demon in the bridge on my Pacifica 112J yesterday.

I'd probably like it now, but I still think the name is horribly misleading at best.

Re: I put a Screamin Demon in the bridge on my Pacifica 112J yesterday.

Yeah, the name is a little misleading, but to me it sounds great and it seems to have loads of harmonics. While not being a "hot" pickup it's not vintage either. On this guitar with the other two pickups it works great so far. The more I use it the more I like it. I might take this guitar to band practice Sunday afternoon.
