After much experimentation with everything from LOW to HIGH power pickups, a couple of Magnet swaps in a Custom (5, 8), a few brands etc etc
I have settled on the CC as the best bridge model, though I would fear mud in a LP.
Here is the thing - I really think you have to mess with the screws and push the CC close to the strings to make the highs cut a bit. Who wants that much butter on their toast anyway? I don't! High cholesterol. I have found the CC thru even MIDDY amps can sound GREAT. I usually keep my mids flat anyway.
I usually like balanced sounds, and balanced pickups. However, vs anything I have used - the CC wings the classic Marshall tone in a box (or pickup) category. Almost any amp instantly has some ballsy mids thanks to this pickup. Leads always slice thru yet the top end has sponge, and the lows are sweet and loose. If I need the lows tighter I can use pedals or HIGH HIGH gain amps. Thru ultra gain, this pickup still has some vintage character.
I have never been pleased with the clean up on this pickup. Though it does a nice twang thru a Bassman, I didn't buy it for cleans. I shockingly think you CAN shred with this pickup (not THE best choice, but you get me here, right?). It battles the meanest drummers with ease. It was sweet over a country band, though a tad thick - but that's how I like it. It does a gain-y blues. Basically, I see the CC as an improved JB. (In fact, I want a B Moore Guitar, and if I get one, I will swap the JB bridge for a CC, me thinks)
Either way, the mid signature is so Marshall-esque that I feel I always have a freak nasty tone anywhere I go. I'd rather be nasty than friendly - I play rock with this pup. If I wanted smooth jazzy or 50s chuck berry tones - yes, I would look elsewhere.
If I want an unbalanced and snarly pickup to do some damage with, this is my choice for anything exc nu metal (like I would even care).
