umm, I dont think anyone has either enough idea of what a cheap ss ACTUALLY sounds like, or enough fiddling with the mesa to form that opinion.

I'll sell you a 15watt kramer amp if you aren't sure :smack:

my tastes been changing lately, i want some dirty (raw) type of tone , what amp can give me that raw tone form lenny kravitz american woman? and i can tweak a little and give me higher gain?

at bedroom tones?

You are not going to push the tubes at that level; any way you look at it you are compromising tone doing that for high gain sound. Even with a hotplate; due to "bedroom levels".

The reason the modeling amps are so sweet is that they model that pushed sound, and sound the same at any volume (except for really quiet - no tone if there is no substance) ...you don't want to harm your ears by playing too loud. You should really go the modeler route for health reasons and tone. The only other route I would suggest is getting a POD, pair of headphones, a laptop and start recording. Of course that is not such a great alternative if you don't want to record but rather want to jam in a band setting.

It seems that the consensus on this forum is the Vox Valvetronix modeling amp. You sound like you are going this route - I think you should do a search using only this keyword: "valvetronix"

As far as cabs go, the forum consensus seems to be earcandy 2x12 buzzbomb which simulates the sound of the 4x12

i know i think im gonna go with a modeller, i think im gonna go with a line 6 flextone III 2x12 , btw does anybody knows if i can directly record to the pc with the flextone ? like a guitar port?

Re: I sold my mesa and my wallet is $1450 bucks fatter what to get?

You can, but it won't have nearly the options of a POD or Toneport.

I suggest a PODxt and a good set of monitors.

Re: I sold my mesa and my wallet is $1450 bucks fatter what to get?

Get a good tube amp with a useable master volume and you should get your bedroom volume, but still have an amp that you can use out. If you're looking at that 15-20 watts range amp, you might have to stick a microphone in front of it if you've got a wildman drummer wailing away.

The BuzzBomb doesn't simulate the sound of a 4x12... it OWNS it.

Metal, perhaps Jeff and the others have it right when they say you should grab a PODxt. Although I still can't figure out why you owned a Mesa Recto half stack if you were mostly a bedroom player, it's too bad you didn't think you could get a good sound of it.

Re: I sold my mesa and my wallet is $1450 bucks fatter what to get?

My all-time favourite bedroom level rock/metal tones were a PODxt in Direct mode running into the effect loop return jack of an all-tube 75w Ampeg 12" combo that sounded like ass by itself.

At the moment I'm using a quarter stack -- Peavey xsr (JSX with the nameplate turned upside down) on a Carvin Legacy 2x12. Sounds great, but definitely gets me itching to spin the volume knob more than I ought at 11pm. :headbang: :nono:

Re: I sold my mesa and my wallet is $1450 bucks fatter what to get?

PODxt ? You could probably even plug it into your home stereo until you get the monitors...just a thought

I do this. Sounds pretty good actually

Re: I sold my mesa and my wallet is $1450 bucks fatter what to get?

Don't dismiss the Vox ToneLab SE. Line 6 isn't the only modeller out there. IMO, the Vox stuff sounds better and captures the real amp feel much better than any other. If I were to get a floorboard, it would be the ToneLab. And you can run it through the PA for gigging/jamming with friends.

Re: I sold my mesa and my wallet is $1450 bucks fatter what to get?

No offense at all to Erik, but everyone is always raving about the Tonelab and how much better it is... Honestly, I've never heard a recording of it that didn't sound like ass. My buddy has one of the 50W combo's, and that doesn't sound much better than the XT at all, and it's way less versatile.

Re: I sold my mesa and my wallet is $1450 bucks fatter what to get?

The 50 watt combo has less to it than the ToneLab does. The ToneLab has the same stuff as the AD60 and AD120 amps, which includes stompbox and speaker cab selections, more amp models and more effects. The AD15/30/50/100 are a budget line and what they do, they do well. I own the 50 watt combo and to me it has the best feel of any of the modellers I've tried, which includes the PODxt. There's others that will agree with me there. The POD's just feel fake to me. Dynamics aren't as smooth and I don't think their Marshall models are all that good. Vox does a much better job there.

Hearing a recording is one thing, playing through it live is another. ;)

Alot of this involves what the definition of "bedroom volume" is.

For me anything over the typical sound of human voice talking is louder than a bedroom volume amp. No decent MV amp, unless were talking something goofy like a 4 or 6 watter, is going to sound natural or good.

I own 4 amps, 2 of which have MV's on them. Neither sound really authentic torked down. They sound like a MV amp being squelched volume-wise.

...and this is why I own a PodXT and think of it as important to my playing as I do every other amp I own.

The idea of a tube amp at bedroom levels I'm convinced is a misnomer. I've never heard one sound remotely good or authentic at those volumes.

Yes. He didn't like the 5150, either.

Are you really sure what you like at all, Rombola? Why not just play every amp at Guitar Center, and then tell us what you liked/disliked, and we can guide you from there.

You've basically told us "I want a bedroom level tone thats raw and gainy, I didn't like the 5150 or Recto."

You aren't telling us why you didn't like them, besides that you weren't satisfied and it sounded like a cheap SS amp. Did you even try the settings I gave you, before? You should've at least been able to find a tone you liked, starting from those. Your settings you listed before would've made it sound like a ****ty SS amp, but not the ones I gave you.
