I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

So... yeah. I like it. A LOT.

I don't really know where to start. I think it would be good to keep an ongoing comparison with the SH6 and 5 as it's quite likely part of a contest with those other two.

I'll start with what I don't like:
It lacks presence
It's almost too powerful, at least for me

BUT:

You can add treble from your amp
You can set it low, and we'll see later it's very reactive to the volume control

Still, it's not perfect for me. But place it in a bright guitar and I'd guess it'd be a match made in heaven...I may try a 1M volume pot.

How it sounds:

In short: Hot, dark, smooth.

In long... the first thing that came to my mind was that it's very thick sounding, more so than the Distortion.

Unlike both the SH5 and SH6, the treble however is a little lacking... but not in a bad way. In a 'eh I could do with more treble but whatever' way rather than a 'meh, too dark, ToneZone' way :D

The midrange seems fairly flatly EQed to me. It cuts, you can really hear it though, but it's got no annoying spikes or the likes. It's very thick again, and quite smooth sounding... Rid said it had a 'piano' like sound, with loads of harmonics to it, and I have to agree. It's a very rich sound for sure!

The bass is tight, but not overly so. You can feel it as much as hear it, which for me is important. Sometimes you hear it but you can't feel much.

Put all these frequencies together and you have the perfect high output pickup to tame a bright guitar or just really, REALLY push your preamp.

I don't know what else I can tell... when I first tried it it was in a guitar very similar to mine now and through a JCM800 (100W) and a 412 cab. We put the amp with the gain on 10 and with the guitar's volume control, we managed to get a perfectly clean tone, pretty much just as loud too, without changing anything on the amp. It was fantastic I gotta say, I was never able to do that with other pickups. The Jazz cleans up great, the FS cleans up ok, the Custom as well but the Distortion doesn't too well.

I'd also like to say this pickup has both a very pleasing lead voice, AND a great rhythm tone: tight, thick, powerful...

It's not as clear as say, the FullShred. But I don't miss the Custom or Jazz when playing the SH15, which means it's clear enough ;) And I'm one who likes clarity.

Anything else you guys want to know?

Me too, but went back to low wound A5 pickups like the JazzB and the '59B and a Pearly Gate+. These have less compression and the sound better with my Fender amps (6V6 and 5881 tubes). The C5 was great when i play with my friends full blown Marshall (EL34 tubes), but else it failed.

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

Yeah I like it alot as well man. Its a very thick pickup that doesn't get muddy. It haven't found a downside to it yet! :D I wouldn't call it dark though. It has sizeable amount of treble, just not harsh or shrill treble. What guitar did you put yours in? Mines in an Ibanez SZ520, all mahogany with a maple cap. They mesh together perfectly!

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

Mine's basically a Basswood Strat with Floyd. The guitar herself is pretty neutral sounding though.

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

If it weren't so high output I'd get one for my Strat right now. It'd just sound amazing in it... but I want to keep her tamer. But if I ever had a bright guitar to use for metal, the A8 would go in, no questions.

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

thicker than a distortion? you have my attention.

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

OK, you convinced me - all being well, there's an SH15 and an SH2n going into this

Looks very nice! Be sure to try a Pearly Gates in the neck when the chance comes. It, like the Alt 8 has some "Good Nasty" going on! PGs and LPs have a thing for each other as well.

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

You've no idea how close I came to throwing a PGn into the order just for the hell of it - just in case, you know...

What kind of finish is that? Looks like a slate veneer or something similar for the top of that. Did Warmoth issue that guitar or was it modified with that top afterward.

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

Weird, there is no picture in that thread, but they say it is some kind of metal, but to me is still looks like slate in that picture of the earlier link you posted to. Take some pics when you get it please. I want to see if it looks different in a different picture maybe with different lighting.

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

It's not metal, just their 'crushed steel' paint finish. It's not a standard option, but it does appear in the Showcase from time to time. Pics could be a few months away, as the neck is a custom ordered piece.

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

Looks Like SH2 - SH15 is the new way to go ^^
To me the Alternative 8 is a JB without the "issues",
which is quite cool considering how popular teh JB is.
Pierre was talking about it being "dark" which surprised me because in my Vigier
it's VERY clear, but it's an alder superstrat with maple fingerboard,
so quite bright and clear already.

Yeah i always have a Spare PG and a spare SH-12, just in case, just here right next to me in the "tool box".

Problem is the color: i have 10 guitars and none have the same color of pickups !
Red, Zebra, white, pink, nickel cover....

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

Hmm, I just got a new Floyd guitar but it's a Mahogany neck-thru (both neck and wings) with a rosewood fretboard and a THICK Ebony top.

Any bets how it'd sound in that?

Ebony top??? What guitar is that?

And yes it should sound awesome. But I disagree....I don't find the alt 8 dark at all. Theres a good amount of treble actually! Its not just shrill or harsh, its more rounded. So if your guitar is super bright the alt 8 wouldn't be my first choice to tame it.

Re: I spent a little more time with the SH15 now...

It's from a Korean company that I've found to produce amazing instruments (regardless of price which is VERY low). Swing Guitar Technology.

My guitar is the EZ-10 and I just found out that they made a completely new line based on that concept, the Rush 100 with more aggressive shapes :)

Here's mine:

and HERE's the link for their Rush brand

i have an all-mahogany 25.5 scale 22 fret guitar, how do you think the Alt8 would sound in it? would it be too mushy?
