I think I might have made a mistake when I ordered my Carvin CT3M (an option)

Well I wanted stainless steel frets but I'm not so sure I feel good about the medium jumbo size they offer it in. If it's anything like the medium jumbo on the Fender American series strats it's not gonna work, that crap is too low and I hate it. I I can help it, I get all of my guitars with jumbo fretwire. The carvin medium jumbo size is .48" high and .103" wide. The jumbo is .55" high and .110" wide. I could change it, but there would be a $50 fee for that. I mean I could send the guitar back if I don't like it once I get it, but I'd hate to wait 2 months just to find out I'm going to hate the way the fretboard feels.

dont hesitate - pay the $50 and have them build it the way you want it ... it would suck for you to get this guitar and not love it perfectly .. if you have to sell it after hte return period, you'll get killed on resale value for way more than $50 ... $50 is nothing divided over the life you'll be playing that guitar

This has to be the first time you've ordered a custom guitar right?

The process goes like this:

1) You think you've got everything right, then you change your mind just before you order. This happens several times :laugh2:

2) You order and are completely satisfied.

3) A few weeks later you begin to doubt whether or not it was the right thing to do.

4) You reassure yourself but when you get it, and it feels alien because you've never played it before.

5) A while later, you get used to it and wouldn't part with it.


Well, thats happened to me twice :laugh2:

That said, if you really feel you've made a mistake, maybe the $50 will be worth it.

well that's the part that's difficult. 1. with SS frets it'll never need a fret job, and they frets will never get smaller. 2. With regular frets I wear them out pretty fast. 3. I love the way SS frets feel and wear.

It's really a compromise and the worst thing is I don't know if I'm going to like it or not, I might end up liking it, I just have no basis for comparison for "medium jumbo" fret size listed above. Maybe zerb will jump in here.

You could always wait and try it out.
If you like it. Keep it.
If not, send it back. Get refund.
Then order a new one with the Dunlop 6100 jumbo frets.

Yes means a longer wait. But, then you'll have what you want.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I have 10 days to try it out. It's not like I don't have other guitars.

According to Warmoth's chart, Carvin's "medium jumbo" is slightly higher and the same width as dunlop 6150 size, taller and wider than 6105 also.

I'd suggest just calling and talking to Carvin, and ask some very specific questions about their frets. Do they use Dunlops, or not? try to get a good idea, for comparison's sake, of frets you're already familiar with

The salesman that's in charge of my order is a great guy, but doesn't know much about this kind of stuff. I couldn't get a real answer out of him. He obviously just didn't know.

Also, my dilemma is the fact that if i go to a larger fret size, it'll be regular nickel/silver and not Stainless steel. Otherwise there'd be no question.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Those are actually pretty tall for medium jumbos, most of the medium jumbos are a lot smaller, not really jumbo at all. The name is pretty misleading. If you can find a Hamer in one of your local shops, they use frets that are .05" tall, very similar to the size you've ordered. I think most new Gibsons use that fret size as well.

By the way, I think you mean .048", not .48"...frets that were half an inch tall would give new meaning to the term "jumbo fretwire."

uh oh...why does this post make me think this guitar will end up like the parker...your favorite for a while then...i hate this thing and off to ebay it goes hahaha...don't let $50 stop you from getting the right guitar if you think the frets won't feel right. i'd take the right size over stainless any day!!

No way, this one I'm keeping either way. I'll give it a shot, I may just end up liking the wire. It's much larger than what's on your fenders right now so I think I can deal.

hey don't pick on my fenders lol...i have no complaints with med. jumbo myself...i'm just getting sick of vintage wire so all my MIM fenders are on the way out!!
