I think I want a bass....

I bought one of these for my son - but his has a rosewood board. Rondo offers way more variety than Fender when it comes to short-scale basses. I'm no bass expert, but I think it's a great axe, especially for the $109 I paid for it. I love playing it.

Short scale a great for kids and for guys who play guitar most of the time. If you're adjusted to a normal bass' longer scale, then I think MIM is the better way to go, for resale purposes and because parts-swapping is easier. I'm not sure about basses, but SX guitars have a lot of non-compatible hardware (esp. necks) on them.

yeah I'm looking into that one. I'm really drawn by the looks (I love black inlays and the natural finishes on fender bodies), but I'm mainly worried about the all-maple-ness of it. I want the really old school smooth, warm, deep, rumbling tone which is usually more common with rosewood and alder (or ash) that Jazzes are normally made of. But it's definatley in my eye...

Its a versatile bass. You could go from smooth jazz to slap funk to rock and punk depending on how on you play and your EQ settings. Bass chords are amazing on that bass; its a clear instrument.

But if you're going for only the deep, warm old school tone then a 5 string Jazz (alder/rosewood) of some kind would be the way to go.

Re: I think I want a bass....

I'm gonna spend a month or so browsing pawn shops and a few small guitar shops around here.... any particular years of these MIM Jazz's I should keep away from? I'd love to find an old hidden gem somewhere than no one really knows what they truly have, and if I could get it for a decently cheap price... then woohoo. I'm gonna go soon and see how some of the new Squiers play. The goal is to keep it $200 and under (which would be amazing), but if I find one I reaaalllly like then i could stretch it a hair. I dunno, I'll see what happens when i get out there and play a few
