I bought one of these for my son - but his has a rosewood board. Rondo offers way more variety than Fender when it comes to short-scale basses. I'm no bass expert, but I think it's a great axe, especially for the $109 I paid for it. I love playing it.
Short scale a great for kids and for guys who play guitar most of the time. If you're adjusted to a normal bass' longer scale, then I think MIM is the better way to go, for resale purposes and because parts-swapping is easier. I'm not sure about basses, but SX guitars have a lot of non-compatible hardware (esp. necks) on them.
