I want a new amp.

I just don't know what I want. My birthday is coming up and the lady in my life is insisting that I tell her what I'd like. Pleasures of the flesh aside, I'm looking at the Orange Or15 and the Laney Tony Iommi 15w but I have a weird thing about people buying me stuff. I'd more than likely throw some cash in to make myself feel better about it.

I don't think there's much of a point to this post, but if you have any amp suggestions or other amps you may be looking at in a similar price range feel free to post them.

Re: I want a new amp.

It's a special gal that will buy a dude some gear. Go with it, take her limit, and still throw cash in for something special. i had to buy my NAD b-day gift solo this year, which works just as well.

Re: I want a new amp.

My old lady just contributed some $$ (and more importantly, her blessing) to my recent birthday guitar purchase.

The problem with us musician dudes is that a) we often already know what we want b) it's usually something that has to be to an exact spec and c) it's usually so expensive that it's not practical as a gift suggestion.

Makes us tough to buy for.

Yeah, she's pretty great. When she brought up buying me gear my jaw almost came undone. Now I just have to decide what I want.

this is exactly my situation too. One of the problems is that I can even write down what I want and her eyes will glaze over when she looks at it. I have some pretty exacting requests though, I guess.

I'm sorta in that position soon too. My birthday is less than a month and all I can think of is stuff that's too expensive. I need some 10" pa speakers to sort of complete my digital setup, or I'd like to get an Xtracycle bicycle rear end extension to start putting my cargo/kid hauler bike together.

Knowing her she'll end up buying me a VW Squareback. (shrug) Either that or she'll click in that I want a Vox ad120vtx or Super Champ X2.

Re: I want a new amp.

I guess that if I can't justify the cost on my own I find it difficult to ask someone else for it. She is a persistent gal though...

Decisions, decisions

Re: I want a new amp.

Loving my OR15!
I'm an apartment jammer and occasionally jam at others' houses.

There's a spot on the master volume where you can get lots of gain at "won't wake people in the next room sleeping" levels that sounds good. A little buzzy cuz it's bedroom volume y'know?
But don't get me wrong the amp is loud. Louder than I remember the night train or tweaker being.

Nice clean tones, but they DO get dirty at high volumes. It's a dirty amp what can I say. More gain than I know what to do with. I don't need the gain to be past 1 or 2 o' clock to get hard rock and sabbath-y stuff which this amp seems really really great for. It's voiced kinda like a little el84 JCM800 with that orange fuzzy grind, it's not like a "real OR" amp, I'm told. I haven't played one. On the clean end it can get fendery and chimey with the mids back. very responsive to the output of your pickups and your guitar volume.

I like the low end on this amp. With the master above half I rarely need to keep the bass above 11 o'clock. It's not tight per se but it's big and thick.

I love my OR15 and am (slowly) saving for the PPC212 cab! My cab right now sucks cuz I'm... broke :( I got a Vox 112NT that I sold the greenback out of and put in one of the really low-end celestions, the Super 65. And yet the amp still sounds good. I demoed it thru the 212 at GC and I was in heaven.

hahaha that's what WE are here for!!

For example:

"You may be having a hard time deciding whether you should get the Laney or the Orange, so you should clearly buy both and run them in stereo".

Then, you can get your lady friend to buy you a stereo delay pedal.

Problem solved!

Re: I want a new amp.

Orange amps are probably my favorite. I can't get enough of that huge stoner-rock bottom end. With that said, having to get a cab would increase the price and make me feel like a jerk.

You sir, are an evil genius. I can dig it!

Re: I want a new amp.

yup the OR15 is pretty stoner-y! I have an Agile AL-3000 with a Jazz neck pickup. Roll the tone off on that thing and crank the orange and it just gets so sludgy. The texture is rich and interesting, there's nothing flat or boring about this amp unless you compare it directly to Oranges that are 2x the price or more.
but hey at least I can attest that the amp sounds really good even through a cheap, tiny, MDF cab with a $50 speaker. You don't need to go nuts on a cab unless you want to.

Re: I want a new amp.

I've been playing my amp whilst reading this thread, my iphone cam sucks noodles but here's some orange pron.
Those are my practice settings, everything at noon but the gain knob. Easy to dial in something workable on this amp :)

Re: I want a new amp.

Hey man, not to put your decision into a tailspin but have you heard of Hovercraft amps? The dude takes old busted amps and refurbs them into stoner-voiced monstrosities, and the 20w all tube one start at $650 for the head.

Basically you can contact him and he'll voice it anywhere from tweaked Laney/Marshall to full-balls Sunn/Matamp/Orange, and he's also figured out how to put the HM2 voicing in his amps too, so you have in essence Entombed in a box. They're usually single channel but he puts FACs on everything. It's like a 1.5 channel amp, usually.

if you ask him for something based on SN122 specs, this is what you get.
