I want a Slug pickup in my new B.C. Rich Bich guitar, but what to pair it with?

Just got me another B.C. Rich Bich.

I already have a PRO X Bich with the stock EMG 81/60 combo and I really like that one.

This new Bich is one of the rarely seen Calibre' series from Europe, a 2008. It has a true 1/2" thick carved curly maple top (no cheap veneer here folks!).

Anyhow I want something really over the top for pickups, it currently has Rockfield Mafia ceramics which are not bad sounding, but I want this guitar to sound really HEAVY. I've had an X2N in the past and I want something WAY heavier than that pickup so I'm hoping the Slug does it for me.

If the Slug is my choice, what for the neck, another Slug, a Black Winter?

One more question, they say it's a bit longer, does it fit into a standard humbucker routing and does the pickup ring mounting screws line up with a standard ring??

Anyhow, here's the new axe:

i would say pair it with another slug, or the dedicated slug neck pickup, if you dig the classic thick tony iommi or the super full scott ian neck tones then you might like an El Diablo (22k alnico 2 bars as rails, originally designed for tony iommi later adopted by scott ian and marketed as his sig custom shop pickup)

well, the slug has a custom ring to accommodate the wider coils, also as the duncan custom shop page specifies routing might be required on some guitars with very shallow pickup cavities

Great info, thanks!

The SLUG is also great with an Invader neck.

I'm leaning to a Slug neck, I wonder what the difference would be between the 2 pickups?

Thanks, I basically stole it, the guitar place had NO idea what it was, they priced it like the cheap Korean Rich's.

The neck is quite a bit lower resistance and sounds like a good tonal match for the bridge.

Be a MAN - Slug bridge in bridge, Slug bridge in neck.

^^
That sounds like a recipe for a muddy neck. I would use the neck calibrated version for the neck.

well, when scott ian used the double El Diablo set on his washburn and jackson guitars his neck didn't sound muddy, and from the clips the Slug sounds overall brighter than El Diablo

Well, I could be wrong. But given that the neck has more string energy and a generally bassier tone, I would still go with a calibrated companion pickup if one were offered.

The "El Diablo" in the neck position of his guitars was designed for that position and had a different wind than the bridge model. The DCR was like half the normal "El Diablo" bridge, if I recall correctly.

well i always saw the specs saying only El Diablo pickup model, so i thought he had a regular El Diablo on the neck instead of a special calibrated pickup

Thank you. If the Custom shop builds you a bridge pickup and then makes you a neck pickup to fit with it, I say at least try it.

Looks like I'm contacting the Custom shop for a Neck & Bridge specific set of Slugs! Whee, here we go!!

Da Bich is gonna sound deadly! :cool3:

Dude!
How could it sound otherwise.
With great power comes great responsibility.
Or, you could just go to eleven.

Be a MAN - Slug bridge in bridge, Slug bridge in neck.

You could do this, but your neck tone will sound like slugs, rather than SLUG! Having tried it, just don't. I still haven't wired two Bridge slugs in Series in a tele 4 way switch, but I might someday, if feeling truly demented.
