I want to own a Gibson

I thought I'd give Gibson some well deserved propz today. I stopped at a local dealer today and plugged one of these in for a while:
LHDCBUGH1_Longhorn_Double_Cut_h.jpg

I was surprised to see it there since it was one of the guitar of the month models from probably two years ago. It looked like new.
It was in this same blue finish over a nice sorta subtle flamed maple.

The neck was very comfortable, on the small side of medium thickness. The fretboard was fairly flat, and the frets probably medium jumbo. It actually makes you want to shred on it. And I found I was able to play the fancy stuff quite easily on it.

The tone from both pickups was clear and tight. It looked like both were 85's, unless 81's are also now made with the gold logo. I think I'd prefer an 85 at the bridge rather than an 81. The tone cleaned up very nicely when I lightened my pick attack, which might not happen as readily with an 81. The tone in the middle position had a bit of that sweetness you hear with a pair of vintage pickups, but not as much as with real passive vintage pickups. Still great for clean passages.

What I didn't know about this guitar until today is that it also has piezo pickups at the brige, routed to a separate output. Handy for gigs, though I'm not sure how much gigging I'd wanna do with a sweet guitar like this.

I didn't inspect every inch of the guitar for workmanship, but what I saw looked great. The tone and playability are superb. I'd love to record tracks in my home studio with this guitar. And what's more, I think the body shape, finish, inlays, and general aesthetics are very classy and tasteful. An axe I'd love to rock one day.

Re: I want to own a Gibson

Gibson definitely did a nice job designing that one. The only thing I'd like them to change is the inlays- I think trapezoids would look better than rectangles. Gibson needs to make more guitars like this.

Re: I want to own a Gibson

That is a sweet looking axe. After my Strat the first guitar I really wanted before I knew better was a Les Paul or SG Supreme. This kind of reminds me of those.

Re: I want to own a Gibson

Nice! I like the cup of asparagus on the headstock!

Re: I want to own a Gibson

Asparagus is a delicious toneveggie.

Gibsons are my new favorite...sorry Fender...you'll always have a place in my heart next to my Les Paul :smokin:

Two and counting...i think a V is in order, or maybe something in TV Yellow...and a Thunderbird bass for good measure.

Re: I want to own a Gibson

I will never understand why these are not regular production, but things like the sharkfin are coming out. I understand it's pretty close to a les paul DC, but these are just cool looking guitars.

Re: I want to own a Gibson

^ they're creating a buzz. You gotta make what sells and sometimes it takes a while for things to sell...this was GOTM two years ago and is still new in a shop, so i'd say there are still plenty out there for those who want one.

There are several 2007 PRS guitars hanging in my shop...never been owned, just been chillin, gettin lemon oil and new strings every month or so. A singlecut 245, a singlecut hollowbody, CU24's, CU22's, CE22's...how many of those are discontinued now?

People incorrectly tend to equate the phrase "This guitar is being MADE" with "This guitar is being SOLD." Gibson's fans would dig the Longhorn but would probably rather get a normal Les Paul; dudes attracted to the unique vibe the Longhorn would just as soon buy a PRS, Hamer or other similarly styled instrument.

I still think it's a sweet design. If the horns came to a sharp point like the Johnny A, i'd want to own one but i think for the reasons i stated above, the Longhorn's gonna remain an out-of-production, hard-to-find 'niche' instrument unless some multi-platinum rock star shoots the demand for them through the roof.

Re: I want to own a Gibson

That thing just wreaks CUSTOM! I would make two tweeks:

#1 Swap what is likely the neck volume with the toggle, so all the pots ran along the bottom

#2 Can you get smooth gold covers for the EMG's?

Axe of the Gods!!! Been a lot of Gibson trash talk lately - but then again they do a lot of dumb@$$ things! This WAS NOT one of them.

You need to keep track of that beast!

Re: I want to own a Gibson

Guys,
Price was $2200, which makes me think it was new, though I don't remember seeing it in that shop before. I don't have the cash anyway so I didn't ask. Besides, I'd spent more time than I'd wanted playing it and I needed to get home.

Good point about guys who would buy this guitar being just as likely to buy Hamers or PRS's. Guilty as charged!

Yes, there might be a few small things that could be changed, and some, like EMG's with gold covers, could be done by swapping the stock parts with aftermarket ones. It does look like the controls were laid out as though someone was originally thinking of putting a 4th knob there, and that could be added and the switch moved if you wanted to drill another hole in the top. None of those things would be deal breakers for me though.
I agree that trapezoid inlays would be cool, but I'd want the guitar even if it just had dots. It looks like they wanted to give it a little more upscale look though. The gold hardware, binding, block inlays and the asparagus inlay on the headstock give it a nice classy look.

Re: I want to own a Gibson

I'm happy to see they resisted the urge to make this a 24-fretter.

Re: I want to own a Gibson

I would love to have an ax with a piezo bridge for recording. Would probably always lay down a piezo track, even if I ended up not using it in a lot of cases.

Re: I want to own a Gibson

If the two first pots are volumes like I suspect I understand why the put them there, for quick pinky volume swells.

Nice guitar, the EMG + piezo combo isn't sth you see every day, kinda going for a best of both worlds thing...

Re: I want to own a Gibson

I just looked at one in a store near me yesterday as well. If I remember correctly it was $2500 CDN so I didn't bother to play it. Looked pretty sweet though.

Re: I want to own a Gibson

Looks a bit like the old 335S Firebrand from way back when........
Ebony 'board ?
Not crazy about the inlays, but the colour and the interesting top make up for that.

$2200US...Hmmm.....Let's see,double it,add some geek tax,then add the "It's a Gibson" sucker tax....carry the 4....And that'll cost you about $5000 to buy in Oz.

Nice to see them build something that isn't an Explorer with big chunks removed :1:

Cheers,PJ
