I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

The real question to you is how do you like the Jag? & do you feel the Strat will do you justice? In my experience the Strats from that era are hit & miss. If its a good one go for it, but just because its of vintage era doesn't mean its a killer guitar. Play it for a while and see if it works for you.

Re: I was just offered a 1977 stratocaster

The other guitarist from my band of the early Eighties owned (and still owns) a 1976 hard tail Stratocaster. It was heavier than it needed to be but played nicely. Thanks to a set of Velvet Hammer pickups, it also sounded great. My friend was lucky, the neck on his example was a good fit.

Looking at the upper photograph in the opening post, there is a conspicuous black area between the body and the Low E side of the neck. This hints at either poor neck alignment or indifferent neck/pocket fit. (Annoying but correctable.)

Since this particular Stratocaster is an exchange offer against your Jag rather than a cash purchase, there is an argument for accepting the guitar then putting some work and money into it. Worse case scenario, you can be confident of selling it on.

So did you do it?

70's Strats are hit and miss for me. I've played some good ones but I've played some real dogs too.

Play it, open it up, poke around it. Smack it around a little. If it treats you right and it's got the sound, go for it. If not, then don't.

Here's my thought.

Say yes. Stratocasters are the greatest electric guitar ever made. There's absolutely no downside.
