I was never a fan of Strats... and then this...

Went to work today and at 5:00am I just wasn't ready for heavy metal to be blasting in my ears so I hit up youtube.

Went to put on some Pink Floyd and found an entire concert from their Pulse tour.

Needless to say, I was so amazed by what was coming out of David Gilmour's red Strat that I'm actually considering building a Warmoth one.

I was just blown away at how good his tone is live. I thought tone like that was only really achievable in studios. I got to researching and was pretty surprised that he uses EMG active pickups.

I like to play some clean stuff every now and then and none of my guitars really do clean so a Strat with EMG DG-20's might be next on my GAS list.

GET THIS. I was just flipping through the channels on my TV and there's a biography on Pink Floyd on the Biography channel...

This is a effin sign or something...

He's back to his black Strat with an SSL-5 in the bridge, but still uses the red EMG SA equipped Strat from time to time. Gilmour and his tone is legendary.
The guy is a monster with tone, he's the reason why I started playing guitar in the first place. I saw Pulse on VHS back in '96 and was hooked since then. This video says it all......

Re: I was never a fan of Strats... and then this...

I love the DG-20 set in my own red strat. Mine is an ash body from '77, an old Dimarzio brass trem block, has string saver saddles, and the neck off of a late 90's Am Std strat. This guitar does it all, from pristine, almost acoustic clean to crushing metal rythms and screaming leads. It still very much sounds like a strat, but it covers a whole lot of sonic territory very well.

Re: I was never a fan of Strats... and then this...

I have a Fernandes red strat style guitar that came with stock EMG David Gilmour DG20's set. It's the closest to a red strat signature of David Gilmours, except this one has a set neck and ash body. Tone is amazing.

I wasn't either. And then: KABLOOEY! Obsession.

Now I have a Lake Placid Blue custom shop stashed on stash-a-way.

Re: I was never a fan of Strats... and then this...

Its the reason why I bought this recently. 1984 Tokai Strat. Gonna change out the pups to DG-20's soon.

love Gilmour and wore out a live Floyd album from the early 90's but one of the BIG strat tones in my head, when I was going through the aforementioned obsession recently and playing strats all over the place, was Clapton's sound on thissun here:

EDIT:

the uncensored album cover is readily available with a single google ;o)

You can buy a pre loaded Dave Gilmore strat plate from EMG. They are very good pickups for clean sounds. It's worth remembering that the 85 used by Metallica and and Zakk Wylde was originally developed for Larry Carlton.

Re: I was never a fan of Strats... and then this...

Yeah the plate is what I was going to get. I love the pearloid plate the pickups come on, and since it's prewired, that's another plus for me.

Hey bro, those Tokai Strats are awesome, better than the originals that were being made at the time. I guess you've checked out the Tokai Fourm vintage section to read what people say about those guitars. I have a 1982 'Silver Series' model (big headstock 70's replica) and the pickups are fantastic ... low output, classic Strat tones. I'm not sure if the pickups from '84 would be the same, but if they have grey fibre bases they are probably great. They may have a letter stamped on them. You can easily find information on the Tokai Forum about your model and what pickups you have. Give them a good listen before you swap them out, and certainly hang on to them if you do.

Yea it is a great guitar, very very solid and well built. The pickups are as you described, I've already looked into it when I bought it. The middle and neck pups are original but the bridge is a DiMarzio SDS-1.

To all practical intents and purposes, Gilmour's stage rig IS a studio rig.

RE: EC's Pros And Cons album guitar tone. A lot of that is Gibson Les Paul. (Check out the tour pics.)

Re: I was never a fan of Strats... and then this...

To all practical intents and purposes, Gilmour's stage rig IS a studio rig.

His studio is on a houseboat which has small doors and not a whole lot of space so he developed a rig that would fit that and being small and manuvarable is good for the stage as well.

Re: I was never a fan of Strats... and then this...

Remember strats are very funny animals. Some resonate, quack and sound great, then some others are toneless plinky sounding coffea tables with strings.
So if your after a legandary strat tone I'd try a few differant ones.I've found that evan the expensive models can be dogs sometimes.
If your gonna build might I suggest bhefner.com I bought a 50's strat body custom drilled for a 3 bolt 70s neck.I finished it in nitro and it resonates like a SOB!! You can get 50s 60s or 70s contour bodies and a tone of neck options just like warmoth. IMO his quality is second to none and prices are d@mn resonable too.

Pulse was the red 57 strat with the EMG DG20.

I actually liked the look of the black strat better, so I made myself a Gilmourish hybrid of the two. Cost me $500 in used parts for and olf MIM JV strat and a DG20 thrown onto a black pickguard.

Re: I was never a fan of Strats... and then this...

I once made my own reproduction of the black strat. Well, cosmetically speaking. It was a black MIM strat, on which I swapped the pickups and the guard. So pretty much the same concept as TattooedCarrot's guitar.

I started playing guitar because my dad listened to that concert so much. I actually have a tattoo on my arm that incorporates the words ''Shine On'' because that song was, is, and will always be my favorite musical piece. It inspired me to get back to playing music after quitting the piano, and for that I am thankful.
