I went to Guitar Center...

Re: I went to Guitar Center...

Great score. I think that the SGs are the best thing coming out of Gibson these days. I love that one's grain and color. Definitely looks like a custom shop job.

Re: I went to Guitar Center...

Not sure if it's the good photography, our just an awesome guitar, but I like it twice as much as other SGs.

Also your explanation of how you ended up with it makes me reevaluate my relationship with SGs

Re: I went to Guitar Center...

Niiiiiiiiiiice! I think full-guard SGs are the best looking guitars ever made...and they only really look right in translucent red.

Are they making Standards with white binding instead of cream now?

One problem I have with modern SGs, though, is the tuners they put on them. The '50's-style single-ring keystones just look odd to me on SGs.

I had to just check the binding out and it is cream, though I know it doesn't look that way in the photo. I can't say the tuners bother me too much, though I do generally prefer the look of a metal button on there. So far, the only thing I do want to change are the strap buttons, they just look way too small and insecure. I think I have a set of PRS style buttons in the toolbox though, so that'll be a two minute fix when I'm sorting out the nut slots.

Thanks for the compliment on the photo. It came OK for the sake of a couple of minutes effort in my hotel room.

What I forgot to mention was that just to check out the balance, I got Paul to dig me out a strap. It was the worst, slippiest strap he could find so I could see how the guitar hung in a worst case scenario. It hung absolutely perfectly. So I'm there, noodling away playing Skunk Anansie's ' Weak as I am' I think, getting along really nicely with it, and I happen to turn around to see a family of four; mum, dad, two tweenagers, all stood watching me at the end of the aisle of amps I'm in. I can't recall having attracted any attention like that before, it just made me smile. At least they didn't run screaming....

Re: I went to Guitar Center...

I have been an SG fan for more decades than I like to admit. I have a solution for the "head-dive" and play position problem that I've been using since high school physics class - no lie. It came to me when the teacher was explaining fulcrums. The fulcrum of a guitar is roughly the place between the two strap nuts. A heavy body (LP or PRS) or a light neck and head keep the guitar in good playing position. The problem with an SG is that the head is too heavy for the current placement of the strap nuts. My first experiment was to wrap my strap around myself and connect both ends to the horn nut. It took a little getting used to, but the balance was great. problem was, both ends of a strap on one nut was not very stable. Solution: For most of my SGs, I just bought another matching nut and mounted it into the horn about 1.5 inches toward the tail from the stock nut. I've been playing my SGs that way ever since...

OK. Sure looks white in the pic, which is why I asked.

As for the keystones, I don't think the single-ring keystones look terrible...just not as cool as the more lean-looking double-ring ones.

Re: I went to Guitar Center...

Looks beautiful. I wish I had found an SG that played as well as my Les Paul when I went looking for one. (Or as well as the Blacktop Tele you mentioned.)

Re: I went to Guitar Center...

I want an SG bad right now... and I just bought a new guitar recently so the wife is not having it...
