Ibanez 2014

Well, the big reveal has happened, and can be seen here: http://www.ibanez.co.jp/usa/products/New/index.html.

I suppose the most good/dramatic/interesting thing is the reintroduction of the Edge/Lo Pro on regular Prestige level instruments, after 10 years of absence (the trems did make something of a comeback in 2010 but only on signature models like the Jem and JS). One reason behind this is due to the fact that the ZP system is under some kind of patent infringement. I'm not sure what the reasoning is as some models, like the MIC/MII guitars and the 30 fret RG still use the EZ, but anyway.

My picks for return to cool:

RG 655 - well, why not just call it a 550? Difference from old 550s is that this one comes stock with DiMarzios.

Remember the old RG7620? 2 hum MIJ 7 string with Lo Pro? Well, it's back as the RG752, with DiMarzio PAFs. Underwhelming colours though.

Munky's new 7. Don't give a toss about Korn but like this (needs matching headstock though!), has the old school square heel to boot.

Prestige S, nuff said. Colour is different in real life, more like Pete C's rybeena burst (Pete, you should sue!).

The MIJ Artist is back, looking back to the 70s/80s with Super 80 Flying Finger pups, mini switches and massive bridge with sustain block, ebony fingerboard.

Kiko Loureiro sig. Kinda like a thicker bodied S, alder with maple top, signature DiMs, Lo Pro, fatter neck.

Loads of other interesting stuff, but these caught my eye.

Re: Ibanez 2014

being a huge Paul Gilbert/ Mr.Big nut, I'm having some serious GAS for that new fireman. This is the first time I've actually wanted a guitar that's made in China.

Re: Ibanez 2014

I think Rich from IbanezRules said that even though the cheaper models have EZIIs, they don't actually have the ZPS retainer bar installed. Don't quote me on that though.

Re: Ibanez 2014

I think you're right, tc, about the ZPS.

As for scale length of 7s, well Munky's is 25.5", the Iron Label RG is 27", RGD is 26.5", Prestige RGs 25.5", Ss 25.5". So there's a bit of variety.

I also like the look of the 7 and 8 string classicals (makes playing Baroque music easier!) but I do wonder how good they are, don't think Ibanez is exactly known for their acoustics.

^ Actually, their acoustics have gotten a lot better over the past couple years. Check out stuff in their $400 range next time you're in GC.

I do *not* need another acoustic. I do *not* need another acoustic. I do *not* need another acoustic....

Re: Ibanez 2014

^^ Well, the AEW series looks nice.

Even the extended range classicals represent a bit of a niche thing - very few classical players play 7-8 strings.

Re: Ibanez 2014

That Munky sig in interesting, cuz every time Ive seem them live of in vids over the last couple of years, he is playing a brown burst colored guitar... Like the 655!!

Great to hear! I've been thinking about buying a 7 string again, but want a longer scale length. So this gives me some more choices.

Thinking of this one maybe? It's the previous Apex model. First production alder bodied 7 from Ibanez, afaik.
