Ibanez AD9 re-issue is digital ????

So, I scorned my friend for having, oh no, a digital delay on his PB. And this what I've got back.
"This Ibanez pedal is just called Analog. open it up, you will see the same transistory, rezistory and sh!t. The circuit in both pedal is analog, but recreation of the sound is digital."

Well ??? Rid, calling Dr.Rid !!!

Re: Ibanez AD9 re-issue is digital ????

what he is saying wouldnt actually surprise me to be honest....

im guessing you have the AD9, mind telling me how it sounds? ive been thinking about picking one up but my guitar center only gets about 1 every 3 or 4 months so i havent had a chance to play with one yet

Re: Ibanez AD9 re-issue is digital ????

I have an original AD-9 for sale if you're interested. I'd keep it, but I have an AD-999 so it's pretty much redundant.

Re: Ibanez AD9 re-issue is digital ????

It may look digital on the inside, but it's got a BBD chip in it which is still analog. Computer looking chips don't necessarily mean that it isn't analog.

BBD = Bucket Brigade Delay.

Re: Ibanez AD9 re-issue is digital ????

i have one & i love it, i don't really care how it does it, it sounds good & has that analog feel to it

Re: Ibanez AD9 re-issue is digital ????

I have a CS9 re-issue, the best chorus there is, will definately look at the FL9first. I am thinking of a delay for reverb purposes and I am looking at the AD9, but I don't think I can afford the originals, what are they like 200-250??? But who is right in the arguement between me and my friend is there a difference between AD9 and DE7 for example, as far analog-digital ???

Where'd you get THAT quote from? It has a whiff of Harmony Central about it.

Having a BBD means it's an analog delay. All integrated circuits just look the same to whoever wrote that.

It's the shortage of bucket brigades that has driven the market toward digital delays that are voiced to sound analog. With the whole world going digital, its simply easier to build a digital pedal, and program its guts to sound analog. Digital has the ability to sound better than analog, but that's not what many of us want. We want-old school funk, be it tape wow & flutter or analog loss of high end.

I have a pair of Rocktron Short Timers - I like them as well as my old Boss DM-3 analog that got stolen years ago. I like them better than the Boss digitals that replaced the DM-3 - they were always too bright, and the echos got in the way of the dry signal.

IMO, digital is the way to go for delay, as long as it's voiced right. Save the BBD's for chorus and flanger pedals, where it makes a difference.

Interesting that the Chinese are producing new BBDs - the NOS supply was drying up. Pretty soon, China will be making tubes and analog chips, and the rest of teh world will be cranking out DSPs. Guess where my tone will come from?

Oh the BL chips....:)
There is really not much wrong with those...
Ok, ok, I know its not as good as the OG Pannasonic chip, but I can't afford a Maxon now, but my CS9 smokes any other chorus out there. But back to the Q, is this pure analog or what?

Re: Ibanez AD9 re-issue is digital ????

Dr. M, Your friend is a tard. What does he think analog means, a tape loop? A water wheel? Autistic musical hamsters playing what they hear on tiny guitars?

Check out some mod recs for the new AD-9. Some say there is better sound to be had. For the money, though, I doubt my ears would care.

Yep, you're getting it cheaper (relative to the Maxon) since it's not the coveted MN chips. The ultimate test is how it sounds though, isn't it. :)

FWIW, The new Ibanez AD9 isn't produced by Maxon, and it sounds like crap next to the reissue Maxon AD9. That's why the Maxon costs twice as much, because it doesn't suck. They have also just released a newer model called the "AD9Pro", which apparently offers thicker sound. It uses Maxon BBD ICs, since the Panasonic BBDs are no longer produced and hard to get. The older Maxon and older Ibanez pedals (the 80s ones actually made by Maxon) use the Panasonics.

Actually, the best delay I've ever heard is the Ibanez DL10, which is digital but rolls the treble off the repeats so it sounds more analog. Only problem is that it can't handle hot signals (like, I dunno, say, a Duncan Custom....) and I really don't feel like going through the trouble of putting stuff in an effects loop....
