Ibanez and their cheap Floyd Roses

When is Ibanez going to start making better Floyds on their guitars?

I bought an RG320 DX about a year ago and I cannot for the life of me keep the sucker in tune. It will stay in tune as long as you don't touch the whammy :evil: but I want to use the whammy damnit! I have no problems with tuning Floyds on any Jacksons or Charvels I've played, but every time I pick up an Ibanez, it's like learning how to tune them all over again. It sucks. I've even went so far to selling it because of this. I need some tips on how to keep my Ibanez in tune. If it keeps giving me touble, I'm selling it and buying me a Jackson again. :smoker:

What model are you talking about? Lo-trs or Edge (pro) or Lo-Pro Edge? I'd steer away from lo-trs if I was an Ibanez guy. Edges, though, are good trems, especially the older models.

A new floyd could cost up to $180 and thats not including fitting. If i was you I'd never have sold the Jackson in the 1st place I have a JEM and a Jackson DKMG and the Jackson which is £400 cheaper wipes the floor with the JEM.. If you could get a decent 2nd hand price on the Ibanez I'd go back to the Jackson... Course thats just what I'd do, you might prefer the Ibanez, tis all a matter of opinion and personal preference.

Yeah, now when I look back on it I wished I'd kept my Jackson '95 Performer with duel JB Duncans. You could've threw that axe down and stomped on it and it would've stayed in tune perfectly. Ah, I sold it years ago like a dork. I was looking around for a decent priced Floyd Rose equipped guitar, so I said what the heck--how about trying an Ibanez RG? I played a few S models before and liked them. Owning this RG320 DX has left a bad taste in my mouth for Ibanez. Not too sure about their quality.

Chace - dude, your Jackson stays in better tune that your JEM does? That's unheard of, man. I think I will go back to using Jacksons once again. :smoker:

Yeah the JEM's got the Edge Pro II bridge which really isn't all that great... I should have looked around more and played more guitars before buying really... Could have saved myself alot of money had I gone straight for Jackson Oh well... You live and learn...

Mine is a fairly high spec ibanez, dunno what trem is on it, but i do know it NEVER goes out of tune. I tune it every few months when i put new strings on, and it STAYS in tune. Alot of people hate the cheaper ibanez trems though, and i don't really see any way around the tuning problems without replacing the trem.


EDIT- Just looked mine up and its the EDGE trem, i would recommend that.

I have a Jem with a Lo-Pro Edge and think it is outstanding for heavy bar use. I'd probably take it over an original or Shaller Floyd (and I have all three on different guitars).

The Edge and Lo-Pro Edge trems are excellent. Many people would take one of those over an OFR any day. However, the lower-end trems are horrible. Many people say Ibanez trems suck because they have only played on a Lo-TRS-equpped guitar. You can retrofit a Lo-TRS trem with an Original Floyd Rose and it fits perfectly, but you would need to do some routing if you want to fit an Edge in there.

heh... i wonder when people will learn that cheap knockoffs SUCK

get a charvel/jackson 2nd hand. preferably from the 89/94 era cos they had original schallers on them. mine stays in tune whatever i do to it. if it's properly set up, it can withstand a nuclear blast.

apart of a rare few exceptions in ibanez and other knockoffs, the rest sucks BIGTIME!

You can buy the Edge trems separately, and they are pretty cheap. That would be a cheap solution to your problem, cheaper than buying a real floyd, and cheaper than buying a new guitar.

Where are you finding these cheap edge's man?

Ibanezrules.com wants $235.00 for one, and that's the only place I know of that sells them. OFR's can be had much cheaper :/

I wonder when people will stop comparing lower end cheap stuff with higher end stuff?

That being said, I did recently jump ship from Ibanez to Jackson/Charvel, and couldn't be happier.

a friend of mine is selling one for £65, black powder coated, thats cheaper than a proper(original) floyed, and its pretty much the same trem, second hand is where its at, when an edge trem gets worn out you just replace the blade.

...but an Edge won't fit perfectly in place of a TRS trem. An OFR will.

Interesting..the performers had the J-500, which is actually a really cheap Schaller copy, the ONLY advantage it has over the TRS/ JT-580 is the hardened knife edges.... Goes to show what difference a good knife edge makes

The JT-580s on modern Jackson Imports are in all aspects save engraving identical to the Ibanez TRS trems, the parts are 100% interchangable.... Of you´re complaining about the TRS, a modern Jackson import won´t necessarily be a godsend.

I too once forsook my Jacksons for an Ibanez.... Twice, actually...FIrst my mid 90s S470 with Lo-Pro Edge, and later my RG1077XL with Lo Pro Edge-7...

While I miss those two guitars sometimes, I have to admmit that while my USA Jacksons are more expensive, they´re just plain more guitar as well, and yI feel a difference...the Jacksons just seem rocksolid... no flexing of the neck, no loosening screws, nothing rattling (although i never had that on my Ibies either).... I don´t know, the Ibanez´s just felt very much like toys to me, just "inferior".... but again, part of me wishes they were still here...

But not enough to stop me from recommending you a 1986 (if you like Kahlers), 87-88 (I like the JT-6, some dont...can easily be replaced with a Schaller or OFR) or 1990-94 era Jackson or Charvel Import.... The Charvel Model series 4-6 (86-88), Toothpaste series 550XL, 650XL, 750XL(89) or Jackson Prefession series Soloist Pro, Rhoads Pro, Fusion Pro, King V Pro, Kelly Pro....

Or of course a used or new USA Jackson, head over to www.mattsmusic.com , Or Matt from www.onlinestagegear.com still has my favorite model, ´96-97 DK-1, as a NOS(?) axe with paint chips for a dirt cheap price... :headbang:

Licensed FR's don't mean they are bad. A lot of them are really cheap but when they are on higher end guitars they are usually licensed so they can improve on the OFR design in one way or another. I had a great Ibanez guitar with an edge FR and it was great.

It's all about the setup. It sounds like either the intonation is not perfect, or the nut is riding a little bit high. Too many players don't pay enough attention to the saddles on a Floyd, and mess with the 2 main bolts and trussrod, then completely ignore the intonation, since it's such a pain on Floyds. Before selling the guitar, find a tech or even a friend who knows how to do thorough Floyd setups and get it adjusted perfectly.
