Ibanez Artcore

I am looking into getting a cheap hollow body or semi hollow body guitar; more specifically I am looking at the Ibanez Artcore (price). I liked the AFS75T because it has the tremolo but when I finally played it, it is considerably thinner then the rest of them. Acoustically I like the sound of the AF75 the best, it’s about twice as thick as the AFS75T but it doesn’t have the tremolo. Sure I could put a Bigsby on it but since it is larger I am concerned about the increased feedback problems. For the most part it will be my church guitar so feedback won’t be a problem but I need it as a backup when I play with my band doing Switchfoot and Foo fighter’s kind of stuff as well. Any thoughts? Does anyone have any sound clips of a hollow body on high gain so I can get an idea of how much gain is manageable (of course volume will play a huge roll as well)?

Re: Ibanez Artcore

While I haven't used the Artcore under highgain, my own hollowbody handles high gain very well. It doesn't feedback like you'd think. Whatever you do, make sure it's not pointing at your speakers and you'll be all set ;)

Re: Ibanez Artcore

If you dig the bigsby, just get the thinner one. It'll sound great plugged in. That extra air only has a significant impact on the acoustic volume, and unless you've got a Basie Band gig, that isn't going to matter much.

If you're planning on rocking like mad on this thing, the thinner body will be somewhat less prone to feedback, so it sounds like a good fit for you.

Re: Ibanez Artcore

If you want to hear a hollowbody under high gain, listen to the later Foo Fighters albums, Dave Grohl plays a Gibson hollow body on most of the tracks.

Re: Ibanez Artcore

I LOVE the Ibanez Artcore axes, and keep in mind that I generally hate Ibanez.

I want to get one as soon as I can, the red one with the Bigsby. So cool!

Re: Ibanez Artcore

I liked the artcore series overall, but their version of the Bigsby blew chunks.

Re: Ibanez Artcore

I can't speak for the Artcores, but if you want to hear a hollowbody under high gain, the guitar player for Nickleback plays Gibson ES-135's.

Re: Ibanez Artcore

The lead guitarist from the Foo Fighters plays an ES-335 primarily through a Mesa Dual Rec. That's a hollowbody under high gain.

Re: Ibanez Artcore

Sorta...135s/335s are semi-hollow and handle gain a whole lot better than a truly hollow instrument. The tone is quite a bit different too, IMO.

Re: Ibanez Artcore

Hi Guys,
I know this thread is pretty old but I wanted to ressurect it. I played a buddies Artcore and I was really surprised with the great tone that it had. I was wondering with some mods (pickups, getting it innotated, maybe putting a bigs on the thicker bodied) if it would make it a more worthy guitar? Dropping the cash on an ES-335 is just not anywhere in the forseeable future. I'd love to mix something up with my strat (EMG-DG20 Pickups) to add a little bit more tone and play some higher gain stuff. What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
Lank

Re: Ibanez Artcore

Before I bought my AF75, I played a bunch of hollow and semi-hollow guitars. In the end, I went with the Ibanez because it was the best combination of build quality, price, and unique tone. Since I got it, I have changed out the bridge and totally redone the setup to accomodate the heavy strings and low tuning I prefer.

I like playing this thing with heavy distortion. It can feed back like crazy, even with all the strings muted, but when playing, it handles heavy distortion and fuzz really well. I was considering changing the pickups, but the stock ones are pretty awesome. The only modification I want to do at this point is to take off the chrome-finish pickup covers.

Hollowbody under gain= The Living End

I used to use my former singers hollow Ibby and it rocked hard. I still think I should grab one.

Re: Ibanez Artcore

I used to have an AS83. LOVED that guitar. Only reason I gave it up was to acquire my Tele. I couldn't believe how well set up and finished it was right out of the box. For a guitar made in China, it was a-okay. If I'd kept it, I'd have changed out the pickups with some Duncan's. Those stock pickups were a bit muddy.

Re: Ibanez Artcore

I've got a couple Ibanez full hollow bodies, an AF75 (thinline, no vibrato) and an AF105 (medium depth). Nice guitars. I upgraded to Duncans and DMz's in them, and the tones are very good. Ibanez doesn't use wood posts under the bridge like some other hollow body manufacturers do, using a stronger bracing system under the top instead, so they probably feedback a little easier when you push them. But standing in the right places and holding your strings when you're not playing, goes a long way to controlling feedback, something you have to watch with every full hollowbody. That said, I have friends that play blues with full, deep hollow bodies at normal bar room gig levels, and they have no feedback issues. You get a much more compex sound with hollow bodies, lots of acoustic overtones. I think it's a great idea to take a solid body and a hollow body to a gig, to give you more tonal variety.

BTW, the AF75 is black with black plastic, so to give it a retro '50's look, I put on white PU rings & knobs, for that tuxedo look. Pretty cool looking.
