Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

Who here used to have the stable of Destroyers?

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

Cool, I didn't know they were making them again. They need to keep them in the lineup forever and ever.

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

Did you change the bridge on your '13?

The Destroyer I played yesterday and a way different bridge.

It was still a tune - o - matic type but....I don't know...more....involved some how.

Yours looks like a tune - o - matic with the wider metric mounts.

I'm just wondering if you changed yours or if Ibanez is using a different bridge now.

Interesting. When I look at different pictures online of current Destroyers I see two different bridge types being used. Mine looks like the one on this DT420; note the lack of nuts on the bridge posts:

Most of the DT520's that I see online seem to have this instead; I think Ibanez calls this a Tight Tune bridge:

The idea is that the nuts lock the bridge down for better transfer to the body. I don't know why they would randomly use different hardware on a production model, but I guess it happens.

I don't feel like I got ripped off, but now that you've pointed it out I'll be certain to obsess over it...

EDIT: Ah, looking at the Ibanez site I see that this model is listed having chrome hardware. Mine (for whatever reason) has gold hardware. I'm guessing they don't have the Tight Tune bridge in a gold plate version? The Ibanez specs also don't show the push-pull on the volume. Again, not sure why they would change specs on the fly like that , but I'm happy - the gold looks better IMHO.

In addition to the burst and gloss black, I have also seen the reissue in metallic red.

A friend had a destroyer in the early 80s. I really liked it. I think it had a bolt on neck.

Do they all have bolt on necks? Not that it makes a difference to me. Im not looking to buy on at this time. Just thought I would ask.

Some models are bolt-on, but the current reissue DT520 is set neck. From what I have seen, any Destroyer model number in the 100's or 200's would be bolt-on, 400's and 500's are set.

I picked up a used DT200 a year or two ago. Nice guitar for the price, pickups are really hot though and I don't know that I want to double my investment just to put in new pickups.

@Dr Vegetable

Don't obsess....I think you may have a limited edition and they are now in production.

Please don't quote me. I saw a youtube video lastnight and the British reviewer/ salesguy said that they are in "extremely limited" production. I think yours might have been one of the limited ones because I am pretty sure they are now in full production.

Who knows why these things happen but I think you lucked out because it would be easier to replace/ repair or find parts for the bridge you have.

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

Heh, no worries. Actually, it does look like my Destroyer is special. The Ibanez specs call out chrome hardware and no coil split on this model. It does look like a few other people have gotten early models from this run with gold as well.

I am really stoked with this guitar.

Dr Vegetable it certainly looks like your destroyer isn't standard production. Could you tell me if the maple on the top of the guitar is a real cap or just a veneer?

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

I'm not sure - I haven't taken tools to it, so have not seen inside the pickup cavities or anything. (No plans of doing so any time soon either, sorry!)

I can say that the top is no deeper than the ~ 3/8" binding, which covers any cap/veneer seam at the edge. But I think this is the deepest flame I have ever seen. It is difficult to describe the 3-D effect, but I've been staring at it a lot. Some cool optical illusion going on there that makes it look like you are looking into/beneath the surface of the guitar. It's so cool, it has to be fake somehow...

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

I scored this sweet MIJ DT420 on eBay, it's got a really nice bolt-on Wizard style neck.

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

Nice! Did it come with the Duncans, or did you put them in after you got it?

For completeness, I'll just add this picture of my other "Destroyer" which is a DTX120. It's a smaller basswood body, but still has the same comfort of its larger cousins.

How can a pointy, oddly-shaped guitar be so dang comfortable and well balanced?

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

I had one in the around 1984?,one of the best guitars I ever owned,I wish I still had it,as good as any Gibson,I haven't played a reissue yet.

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

The set neck Destoyer I had in the 80s was amazing.

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

I used to have am old dt500 from 82 or 83 that I sold. That is one decision I look back and say WTF was I thinking?

Re: Ibanez Destroyer Reissues - What do we know?

Do you mean price range or line of guitars...as in Destroyer range?

I'm only asking because I have a Jem and a USA Custom from the early 90's and they both blow away the korean versions that Ibanez makes now. The latest Japanese ones are just fine, but this Destroyer is made in China, so that was my original concern.

$699 for a MIC guitar?

I'd go for a second hand MIJ one in eBay for that price

I agree with this, the cost just seems too high to me for MIC when I can wait to find a used MIJ Destroyer for the same cost. I would love one of those by the way, the used MIJ that is.
