Ibanez Fireman

I've been interested in these for awhile, partly because I love Paul Gilbert and his goofball humor, mostly because they're awesome. Recently acquired an FRM300PR, the current version that's purple with 3 of Paul's signature DiMarzio mini humbuckers. I really, really like it, plays like butter, sets up however you like, and is a goofy shaped guitar that balances really well.

The PG-13 pickups are fantastic. Three of them with a 5 way in a guitar with a set 24.75" neck works really well, kind of a muscled up, slinky feeling Strat with a good amount of GIbson DNA mixed in. The neck is huge, and once I deglossed it, feels awesome. The profile is hand filling huge, not unwieldy huge. I think the beefy neck has a lot to do with the guitar's fat tone.

I'd love to post pics, but the forum isn't cooperating. Here's a link if anyone isn't famililar: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/de...42up5iMy-L_5vGINu5RoC7ccQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Wait, you dig Paul Gilbert?

Thought you was a grunge-monger.

Paul's been one of my favorites since I saw his blue RG with the faux f-holes in an Ibanez catalog. Semi-related, here's Paul's feelings about Nirvana:

"I'm into music, I still dress silly every once in a while or try to get glasses that look good, but overall, at the core of it, I was into the music. There was a band that I produced called The Zooters and I think they were kind of into Nirvana so I kind of got it second-hand through them.

"Later on, I went and listened to their songs and listened to Nirvana and found out that they got a lot of that stuff from them. So I kind of got it indirectly.

"In terms of guitar playing, when you're learning to play and you have your technical heroes, that's a pretty short window. After that, I don't really care about technique or tricks or anything like that, I just want it to be good music and they certainly were that."

It's sake! Complete with bottle cap knobs.

That's the one

^^ The silver one is sick - Rev. Billy G eat your heart out.

Thank you, man. I was playing the silver one with the band just a few hours ago. We do Little Black Submarines by The Black Keys. The silver Iceman has a Fishman piezo bridge that allows me to do the acoustic intro to the song. Love that guitar. I replace the 'tron with a Gibson 498T, she screams.

That's what you call a rawk rig. Aha, I was wondering about the extra knobs, the piezo is a smart and unexpected touch, you wouldn't expect an acoustic sound to come out of that!

One broad thing I'm going to b!tch about – Ibanez never having a proper custom shop (like ESP and so on). Numerous cool guitars over the years which have been discontinued, it would be sweet if you could order something to your spec based on a shape/format you like which might not be around anymore. It would be expensive, but that's a matter of course for this kind of thing. Yes, there are J. Customs, but customers can't spec (just about every JC is an RG of some sort), and LACS is for artists only.

Some of Paul's personal Firemen. The one on the far left is the very first. I bet the P90 one is one bad mofo.

I like that Paul more or less does an album for whatever new thing he’s into, whether it’s fuzz pedals or new pickups. His forthcoming Xmas album looks like it’s gonna be lots of slide. I enjoy hearing a guy who’s well into his career still getting excited and inspired by new things.

Should've clarified, the CS that exists does samples, prototypes and stuff for Ibanez artists. You or I couldn't order something from there, for instance, like with some other companies. Anyway, more wishful/imaginative b!itching, rather than serious criticism.

Ibanez has had some kind of small operation in the US since the 80s, initially in Bensalem, PA, then in LA, which was then closed and in recent times revived, can't remember the exact sequence of events. They did do small production runs of guitars in the past, like the American Master series in the 90s.
