Checked out the specs on the Ibanez Japan site. The fret board's radius is even flatter than an RG. RG's are usually 400mm (little less than 16"), SRV Strats are 305mm (12"), regular strats are 241mm (9.5"). This RGV is 430mm (17").

That throws me off. I would rather have a more strat-like radius too, maybe around 12", or even 10". The Satriani models have a 9.8" radius (250mm)

Depends on what you like. I'm a metal guy but thin necks just don't feel right though. I love big baseball bat necks that hurt your tendons playing them.

My first real electric was a square-heeled 1990 RG570 with the original Wizard neck.

It was an exceptionally high quality and great playing guitar, but as a beginner/intermediate player, I always felt the neck was a little too flat/thin for me and I eventually sold the guitar because of it. Even today, I remember how unbearably thin that neck seemed. Maybe it was all in my head, ha ha!

Then, a few years later, I'm parting out Ibanez guitars left and right and stumbled across two gems that I held onto for a long time...a MIJ "Super Wizard" neck from a 1997 RG550 and a first-gen, MIK "Wizard II" from when they used a slightly rounder (400mm vs 430mm) radius. Both of those necks were downright amazing and you couldn't tell the difference between where they were made, unlike most I played. In fact, that particular Wizard II felt so much better than all the other Wizard IIs I had tried, I kind of wish I had spent some time with calipers to spec it out before I sold it :/

I think it's a nice idea. RG is pretty cool, but like many here, I never gelled with the Wizard neck.

Yes *sigh*. I love the 1986 deluxe series models, particularly 500-600 series, not easy to find these days.

Damn...all these years I thought my S540Ltd had a Wizard II. That's because I knew it was'nt the first of the Ibby Wizard necks (which I assumed was the "Wizard"). But reading your post made me have a re-look at my guitar's papers/1994 Ibby catalogue and it turns out it's got a "Wizard" not "Wizard II" which is apparently slightly thicker than the first version (...ie the "super wizard") :lmao:

The "original" Wizard, the "Wizard" and the "Super Wizard" are essentially the same neck. The "original" Wizard was technically the square-heeled version and the later "Wizard" was the same neck with the all-access neck joint. The "Super Wizard" was the same thing as the early-'90s Wizard, but with 3-piece construction and a skunk-stripe on the back. It was later refined with the introduction of the Prestige series, as well.

The Wizard II was the thicker profile overall: 19mm to 21mm vs 17mm to 19mm/20mm. The only other difference is that your S540 LTD has 22 frets instead of the RG's 24.

That said, as I mentioned above, there ARE differences in the real world examples of these necks, probably due to manufacturing tolerances, different factories/machines, etc. Many of the Japanese necks are also hand-shaped and finished (or at least were at one point), so an "original Wizard" from the '80s may not feel exactly the same as the "Wizard" on your S540 or a "Super Wizard" on a newer guitar, even though the specs are all close enough to be considered "the same".

Yeah, mine has the AANJ and is one piece/lacks the skunk stripe ....super thin & shredtastic which I like :laugh2:. I'd always thought it was a Wizard II ...apparently not :p

Not that it really matters though. I guess neck shape/thickness is probably more of an issue for "thumb over" players ...it does'nt really make that huge of a difference if you play classical style ...unless it's a real baseball bat.

The S Classic from the mid 90's had a pretty chunky neck and thick body...they were really sweet axes. Those recessed knobs for the push-pulls were pretty cool too..

This looks like a great guitar! The other great thing about it is that it doesn't have a locking nut.

Really nice axes although my small hands happen to like Ibanez geetars for their easy thin necks.

Besides the bridge its awesome. A floyd version even better.
