Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

I'm reading the description about the current Ibanez RG models and I see this in the description:

Edge-Pro II Tremolo Features

Improved design replaces Lo-TRS II
Die-cast brige plate with replaceable knife edge plate.
Strings can be installed with or without ball end.
String holder block is part of the saddle—no more blocks falling out.
Die-cast bridge follows the shape of the fretboard for more comfortable right hand feel.
Allows stiffer string tension for arming and superior return to pitch.
Arm has both height and tension adjustments.

the 4th bullet comment about "no more blocks falling out" has me lost! What blocks are they talking about? This will be my first purchase with a tremola equipped axe. Any advice on what not to buy? :yell:

Thanks,

Jon

Re: Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

I'd personally shy away from the Edge IIs if you might be doing any heavy tremolo work. They're not supposed to hold up to the Edge Pros, or the original Edge's either. And the worst thing is, nothign is a direct drop in for it afaik. The new Edge pro wont fit. The OFR (and similar trems) DEFINITELY wont fit.

The blocks falling out, refers to the little lock blocks which lock the strings in place. In conventional floyds, they can fall out pretty easily. Not a bad thing, seeing as I have cracked 3 of em due to overtightening - and if they didtn fall out, I would've had to replace the entire saddle.

At least an OFR is pretty much a drop in for the Lo-TRS!

Re: Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

Thanks bro! I won't be doing any heavy trem stuff. I'm still a rookie at guitar, PERIOD!! :laugh2:

Can I ask what a OFR is?

Thanks again ,

Jon

Re: Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

it's an original floyd rose .. ibanez policy is that no after market product will fit into their guitars...

No ****. I bought $100 dollars worth of EMGs once and all the electronics wouldn't fit in it (weird cavity for the sabre that year i suppose). I made room though, gotta love a chisel.

Re: Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

the new Edge Pro/ II whammies by ibanez is a smart upgrade, feature-wise. i love it for its non-blocky parts that make palm placement very comfortable. i do use the whammy at times & its performance is reputable.

As long as you take care of an Edge II, and don't do anything TOO Vai-like, it shouldnt give you much trouble. The Edge IIs arent supposed to be able to match the original Edges performance wise, but it MAY just work if you're not doing crazy stuff. YMMV though. Watch out too, as the trem saddles apparently arent made to be very durable.

Like Davey said, an OFR is an Original Floyd Rose. Best Floyd ever, imho.

As for the policy about having no aftermarket parts in their axes, I have to disagree. IMHO, the majority of aftermarket parts will drop in directly, but some may not. Nearly every aftermarket part on my RG (which is pretty much every part, minus the tuners) dropped in with no problem. Only thing I had to modify the RG for was to redrill for wider trem posts (ESSENTIAL for a TRS -> OFR conversion imho), and enlarge the holes for the imperial spec CTS pots. Hell, even the stock mounting rings fit the TB-sized TB-6.

An RG Cavity can just about fit everything in. I've got a 4P5T megaswitch, full sized CTS pots, and it still has room enough room for a 9V in case I ever go active.

Re: Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

Thanks guys!

Now I'm wondering if I should buy something with a Floyd instead? Maybe a Jackson so I can be like Zerb! :burnout:

Re: Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

jacksons are ace instruments! i'm prolly gonna get one soon

a floyd is a nice thing to have, but it can be a pain in the ass for a newbie to set up

Re: Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

Yesterday I tried one of the new piezo equipped Prestige RGs. That thing is the heaviest Strat clone I've ever laid my hands on; it had to weigh at least 9.5 lbs. I thought it sounded horrible with the piezo or magnetic pickups or both. It was hard to tell any difference between then except that the piezo was very bright. Even with the 2 band active EQ it was difficult to dial in a decent tone. Of all the piezos I've tried for Electric, the Fishman still wins.

Re: Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

it helps to plug in that piezo equipped Prestige Ibanez into a decent amp... i've tried that one before but i'm not a piezo fan...

about the whammy issue, if you've been playing for quite a while, you'll go full circle like i did- i started with a whammy-less unit, then was heavily into floating whammies, now i prefer not having them... :)

I personally love Jacksons myself - I reckon they're kickass isntruments too. Just a word of caution though - the JT-580 trems are essentially Lo-TRS's with a different stamp. Everything down to the post specs are the same between the two trems. And if they're anything like the Lo-TRS I had, you won't be a very happy owner

LOL, been there before, except I've gone one step further ;)

Started off with a Squier strat (ie, useless trem unit), moved onto the RG and was heavily into full floaters, upgraded to the OFR then started to prefer it without the bar, and finally, got back into having a passion for full flotaers again.

Re: Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

unlike before ALL ibanez trems are now very good including the edge pro II's :)
the TRSII was a POS! :laugh2:

Sooooo, if that's the case, what's the drop in no change or routing replacement for the Lo-TRS pilocrap trem then and have they changed the recycled durex "knife" edges yet?

Edge 'purists' will tell you that the Edge II, AND the Edge Pro's dont match the original's ;) The Edge Pro's simply lack the lockign posts that gave the originals most of their tuning stability, resulting in Double Neutral found on the new trems. And afaik, the Edge IIs are made out of some 'mystery metal' in Korea - they are not Gotoh.

A complete drop-in for the Lo-TRaSh system, would be an OFR. All you need is a drill press for the new trem posts (cant emphasise how IMPORTANT it is to get new trem posts with the OFR). Get the short block variant (37mm), and you'll have no problems. The long blocks (43mm) won't clear the trem cavity cover at the back - I have a hole in mine. Don't mind though, as the OFR looks great from behind too ;)

Any other advice?

Re: Ibanez RG Tremola Questions

So an OFR will fit in an RG 1570, provided post-drilling, etc.? very good to know :) Is there any way to buy an Edge Pro or Edge Pro II from Ibanez themselves, and just drop it in?

Someone that wants to be like me?? Other than saying "Don´t!! You really don´t wanna go through the sh!t I´ve seen", I´m really a bit dumbfounded. With the exception of my cousin Kyle you´re the first one. I don´t know whether to say thanks or call you an idiot for wanting it :D:D:D

But Back to the Topic....

If you´re looking for a top notch shredder axe (or just one with a fast neck and a Floyd), a USA Jackson cannot be beat. An ESP is just an overpriced copy, and an Ibanez is just a Middle-class Knockoff. But I and others expect Jackson USA Prices too rise within the coming year, so you may want to "kick yourself in the ass" and get one soon. I personally recommend and "endorse" Soloists, unbelievable guitars :smoker: ;)

A USA Jackson is one guitar I can honestly say I don´t know of anyone ever regretting :headbang: :alcoholic

(You guys didn´t REALLY think I totally missed this, did you? ;))

Yeah, Jono knows his stuff on Floyds (althoug I think he does still learn something off me every so often, pls correct me if I´m wrong ;))

But does this mean my "moment of fame "only lasted 30 seconds???? *WAAAH**BAWL**CRYlikeaRive* MOMMYYY!!! THEY DON`T LIKE ME ANYMORE!!!! :crying: :crying: :crying: :D :D :joke: :alcoholic
