Ibanez RG550 ?

I just found an add for a second hand, black Ibanez RG550 with Dimarzio pickups and hard case for $500 AUD (guitar prices are crazy over here, so that seems a good deal to me).

Does anyone know anything about the quality of this axe? Is the tremolo system any good?

Thanks

Re: Ibanez RG550 ?

Great guitar's.

The thing that worries me about the older RG550's, RG570's, etc...... is that they are usually owned by people who want to shred and they tend to practice alot. So, most older RG's are in a pretty bad state and are in desperate need of a refret. This guitar has Dimarzio's so you can bet it's been played.......

It might be worth a look at a RG550 that's only a few years old, one that has an all access neck joint. You'll pay a bit more, but al least you won't be buying someone else's problem.

Re: Ibanez RG550 ?

If it's like mine, it's got the nicer of the two Ibanez Edge trems. Mine never goes out of tune, but like someone else said, mine has been heavily used and abused. They're built for speed and gigging.

Does everything look as it should?

Re: Ibanez RG550 ?

Its similar to my 570, and although i can only speak for my guitar, the quality of this Jap ibanez really is top notch. I've owned mine for a few years now and found no problems at all. You should give it a good play though, because the thin necks on them are a real love/hate thing.

Re: Ibanez RG550 ?

I just went and played it, and I'm really not sure whether to grab it or not. The condition isn't that great, as theres quite a few little chips in the finish, the pickups are getting rusty and the chrome is wearing off the bridge.

The pickups (Evolution/PAF Pro) aren't as agressive as the JB/59 in my Ltd, but give a smoother, kind of crispy sound.

I noticed that there wasn't much sustain though; if I struck the 12th fret, high E, the sound died away quickly and made that harmonicky high-pitched ring.

It played alright although the action was pretty high, but that can be fixed.

I don't find it overly attractive either; I don't think the maple fretboard goes well with the rest of it at all, and I hate pickguards.

I'm told that it's a really good guitar, but I just didn't see anything really special in it. On the other hand though, it's a really good price...

I really don't know...

Then it's not for you :)

There's no sense in buying it if you aren't happy

umm that looks almost identical to my heartfield, this must have been made alongside it in the ibanez factory somewhere around 1991? is it that old. I too have dimarzio pickups and that weird pickguard, actually im certain the bodies are the same but your has a different neck

Re: Ibanez RG550 ?

just out of interest, you sure the pickups werent PAF PRO and Super 3... and is this and edge tremolo or a floyd rose "PRO"

Re: Ibanez RG550 ?

The guy said he bought it new 5 years ago and that the pickups are Evolution bridge and PAF Pro neck.

The trem is an edge, but I'm not sure if it's lo-pro or not

Re: Ibanez RG550 ?

well, if it is a lo-pro id say go with it.
you can tell lo-pros by the position of the fine tuners... see the picture (this is a floyd rose "PRO" but is almost identical in design)

though im not really sure about the neck on that one, the maple doesnt really go with it as much as the rosewood. but your right, prices in aus are terrible!

Re: Ibanez RG550 ?

judging from the pic alone, that Ibanez is a Y2K RG550, featuring Ibanez's renowned Edge vibrato. in that year, the 550 was fitted with the Edge unit, previously, it was the Lo-Pro model as default. FYI...
