Ibanez S 470 help me choose which pickups

Saw a similar thread but I want slightly different sounds. My style is changing, so I'm starting to experiment with different tones. I have one guitar, a Washburn EC 29, a 29 fret shredder, with EMG SA and EMG 81. So I want a bit more variety with the Ibanez guitar.

Lately been getting into "tone". I used to play metal and really hard rock, but I am starting to like a more vintage, "hear every string when you strum" but with nice distortion.

I also need a great clean pickup. One that I can make chords sing, and not distort too much. I play a Digitech 2101 Artist through a Marshall 9100. Probably get a JMP-1 when I can find enough cash.

So this is what I'm thinking for my H/S/H setup:

NECK Humbucker: JAZZ or 59.

MIDDLE Single Coil: No clue. Any good suggestions for a clean, metallic sound? Or any suggestions at all? If I put a Jazz in the Neck, I was thinking a lil 59 in the Middle. Any thoughts?

BRIDGE Humbucker: Distortion, JB, or something else hot.

So let me know what you think, and tell me what would YOU DO, and why would you do it? Thanks man.

I have a JB in the bridge of my strat and its a great pickup. It is very versital pup IMO. I think it has the clariting your looking for. I didn't want to put one in my 470 because I wanted to try some different pickups. I'm starting to lean towards I little 59' in the mid since theres less of an output defference between the lil 59' and the jazz than the JB jr. and jazz.

Well I just installed a SH-4 in the rear and a SH-2n in the neck of my buddies S-470 last week and it sounds amazing.

You would swear those pickups were hand made for that guitar. The SH-4 will get as nasty as you want in the rear but still retains clairty & cleans up great.

And the Jazz in the neck brings a new dimention to the guitar as a whole..... gives you VERY usable clean and dirty tones.

Havent picked a single for the center yet but he is leaning twards the Duckbucker.

I think you would LOVE that combination myself.... brings new life to the guitar.... and the posibilities for tapping and such seem endless with that entire combination.

Just an all around well rounded match from what I can tell. He absolutely LOVES it.

Yeah, that's Seymour Duncan's personal favorite according to their website. I do play some instrumental rock and need high output so was thinking DD. But one more question, does it matter if it's a four conductor cable or a two? What's the difference? Can I install these myself? I got a brain, a soldering iron, and enough paranoia not to totally **** it up.

i like a duck between my C5 and 59 in my ibanez 540s ... for your application between an JB and Jazz, i think a Hot Rails would be smokin' ... don't let the name fool you, it cleans up well enough for very cool chimey/glassy comping but has enough guts to hang with the big boys ...

4 wire will let you split the coils for additional tonal variety when you combine the humbuckers with the singal coil (or by itself) ... if you decide not to do splits, you can just solder and tape the 2 extra wires off and tuck them out of the way easily enough

The four conductor pickups can be split coiled the two conductor pups cant. I just installed a set of pups and it was easy I even split coiled the 2 HB. they're so easy to install.

Hey, thanks a lot for the reply. I am thinking now, goingn with JAZZ then HOTRAILS or LIL 59 then a DUNCAN DISTORTION in the bridge position. Any thoughts?

it'll be killer! ...

and if any of them are 'not quite right' once you get them installed and try them through your rig, you can always use the 21 day 'no hassle' exchange policy to tweak to something different

More vintagey neck might be the 59N or PGN
Vintage Rails mid
JB/DD bridge.

Yeah, the VR middle is really brigth and metallic . A Seth neck would be really sweet tho ...
