Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

i'm 5'10" and 185 lbs so i'm near average size i guess? i don't have huge hands, which has me interested in the jazz bass. i guess i'm going to have to make a GC trip to investigate the differences.
And i uh... refuse to buy a bass called Toby. It sounds like what you'd name a small dog. if any of you are named toby, my condolences. :D

Dude, find you an old Peavey Foundation and rock on!

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

I'm on my way to GC to go investigate their basses. I won't come home with anything today cuz rent is due tomorrow :( but yeah I'll at least have a better idea of what I want.

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

Played a bunch of stuff. Played a few p and j basses, a peavey foundation, a mm sub that needed a new battery :( and a soundgear. There was a vintage modified jazz bass that I liked the most. If it's still there in a few weeks it's mine. But I Discovered the importance of playing it first. Some of them sounded way more balanced than others. I like the j bass sound and the articulation. I got sounds I liked by playing with the tone knob.

I got a VM Jazz recently too. They're pretty nice and a lot of bass for the money.

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

The old MM S. U. B. was made in the USA (hooray) of Poplar (boo).

The old Peavey Foundation is also US-made and as solid as the proverbial brick outhouse. Other old Peaveys are worth hunting out. Many people have little idea what they are or what they ought to sell for. You might land a bargain.

Same goes for the old Guild SB.

None of this matters a bit if you dig the Jazz Bass. Two pickups, three pots, no batteries. It's all in yo' fingers (and thumb).

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

I think I'll like playing bass in which case I'll certainly own a few as time goes by. I'll always have you guys' suggestions to help me out. Thanks y'all.

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

The amp i used was a Rumble 25 v3. I liked the overdrive and contour buttons. Left all the controls at noon. It sounded great to my bass-virgin ears :)
I may get the next wattage up if I can swing it cuz I'd rather not buy a second amp for a while, in case I find myself playing out and jamming with others.

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

I liked those Rumbles when I played one too. I liked it a little more than the Orange Bass Terror as it was a little more controllable on the way-deep bass. There's a lot of nice sounds in a J bass for sure.
I'd bump up to the 100 or 200w if you can do it.

Big clean bass amp works well with acoustics and amp modeling pedals too

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

K ill Look for a used one or maybe I'll have to get one of those zzounds payment plans on it. If it lasts me for a few years I may as well

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

So I put that squier vintage modified jazz bass on layaway and I will free it from the guitar center prison in like a week or two. I just paid my rent and a bunch of bills otherwise I woulda just took care of the whole thing today. But I really didn't want someone sniping it from under my nose. Olympic white, she is.

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

How old is the instrument? For several years, on VM series instruments, the pickup covers used to have Duncan Designed printed on them. More recent website catalogue pages describe the pickups as "Fender Designed". (In much the same way that the new Fender Micro Series compact pedals ARE NOT Mooer.) It might be worth your while examining the underside of the pickups for ID stickers. ;)

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

Brand new bass and the serial indicates 2013 as the year of manufacture. Pickups have D.D. logos and sounded good.

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

I want a hard case but thinking a gig bag would do for the moment plus a gig bag would fit my jazzmaster.
Had a long chat with a local pro bass player there and he said he liked GK heads and ampeg cabs. Looking more and more like im gonna play my bass acoustically for a bit while I save up for a decent amp. I figure every dollar spent on a practice amp is money better spent on a real amp, right? Do most solid state bass amps generally sound decent at home as well as loud as all hell?

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

I have to say

a used Peavey or Carvin head/Combo would be the would get you there for very small change

Search "Carvin" on GC used

there was a Redline R100 combo with two tens and a 15 for $249 and shipping

or Peavey

there are several combos under $200

GC Used

I will be investigating this thoroughly thanks!

Re: Ibanez Soundgear? Looking at more "first bass guitars"

What computer recording software do you have? Many DAWs have guitar and bass amplification modelling built in. This may not be as good as a real amp but it will serve while you are learning, practicing and saving up funds for gear.
