Ibanez Tube Screamer vs. X

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamer vs. X

Cheaper? Boss SD-1, used by Lynch, Wylde (formerly), and supposedly EVH. I think they sound fine stock if just used as a solo booster.

Better? Try Maxon OD9Pro+, though it's prone to feedback. More life and sparkle than OD-808, but not as much gain as SD-1.

My personal fave is Maxon SD9, JRC4558 equipped, with the drive down, it lets a lot more frequencies through, though it does have a slight mid-scoop. Gain out the wazoo, though. I'm not a big fan of the Tube Screamer sound for my particular rig, and the SD9 delivers what I want, though it's only smooth with the drive on zero.

The Xotic BB also just kicks all kinds of butt as a booster, give one a shot if you haven't. It's kinda like an SD-1 on steroids. Lots of steroids. More than Dolph Lundgren in Rocky IV kind of steroids.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamer vs. X

I wholeheartedly agree with what George says about the Boss DS-1 in that article. The stock MIJ Boss DS-1 is about as good as it gets, IMO.

It's the only overdrive I use.

But, IMO, players need to experiment with it and find a setting that allows them to: LEAVE IT ON ALL OF THE TIME AND NEVER TURN IT OFF!

Once you find that magic setting, you can go from clean to overdrive using just your guitar's volume control.

That's how Vai and Satriani use it.

Lew, that was an endorsement, not the coolest thing GL did, but I forgive him. I forgive him . He is a straight up guy for all of his career for the most part. His old website that I've quoted above is constantly referencing his original TS808, and his in the 90s and 80s is very reminicent of that creamy mids/rolled of gain TS sound. That site is really brand unbiased, it simply lists what really happent. I am sure he used DS/SD boxes but too much smaller extent than that interview.

Maybe so...I'm not a huge fan of Dokken or George Lynch and so I'm not as up on his endorsements and what he uses as I am with guys like Vai and Satriani, who I'm more familiar with and who's music I find more interesting.

I tend to use the DS-1 the way Satriani and Vai tend to use it. And that's to find a setting on it that allows me to leave it on all the time and then use my guitar's volume control to go from clean to overdrive.

Most guys use the DS-1 as a stomp on/stomp off overdrive so they set it up with to much level and to much distortion and then stomp it on for solos only. That's not really taking advantage of what the DS-1 does best, IMO.

The DS-1 is FABULOUS for getting clean to crunchy rythym tones with no mud when you turn the guitar's volume control down to 5 or 6...

Lew, trust me I am thinking of DS-1, only a Spina DS, I am hooked on his mods.

John sent me one of his modded DS-1's a year or two ago. It was pretty impressive and had a fuller tone with more overdrive.

I did find that with my stock made in Japan DS-1 I could get a cleaner rythym tone when I turned the guitar's volume control down and since I like a clean tone for rythym most of time I did prefer my un-modded MIJ DS-1.

But most guys, especially the younger guys, go for a lot more distortion than I do.

I'm primarily an old school rock and blues player who finds the sameness of the super saturated "bagful of bumble bees" tones that I hear so many young guitar players buzzing away on almost everytime I walk into Guitar Center or go to a NAMM show kind of corny! :lame:

I do find though, that with my '54 Fender Tele plugged into my stock Boss MIJ DS-1 and that plugged into my smaller 22 watt and under vintage Fender amps that I can nail Jimmy Page's tone on the first couple of Led Zep albums...and that's the kind of tonal variety that I find inspiring.

Nice post Lew.....Not sure about Satch, but Vai uses a modded Keeley DS1....And that means that Satch probably does also...The only difference between the MIJ and MIT DS1s is the opamps(For the most part) but enough difference for guys like us with good ears to hear!

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamer vs. X

I'm shocked and appalled that noone has mentioned the super cheap Arion Tubulator!!!!

The circuit sounds incredible for the $25 price tag. I actually PREFER it to my TS-808 spec modded TS-5. The tubulator has a tad more gain and a smooth smokey OD sound to it that is very very close to the tube screamer, but it's just slightly different. The switches and the knobs on this effect are not first rate and they do go out of order/fall off pretty quickly, but I'd re-case this pedal to keep it running rather than part with it. It's that good. It's tone even impressed Brisk to the point that he was shocked by it's tone and he has incredible taste and supremely nice gear. Incredible tone at a bargain basement price. I'd buy another as a backup, but I just don't feel the need as the price hasn't skyrocketed just yet. For $25, what do you have to lose?

Vai used to use a Keeley modded DS-1, his latest pedalboards have had a stock one on them. He does use a Keeley modded TS9 for faster passages, he says the DS-1 doesn't track well enough. I don't think I can play fast enough to worry about that:bigeyes2:

I'm pretty sure that FTLOG (and most of P&W) was a SD-1 into a modded Marshall, it sounds like a SD-1.

George has used all kinds of stuff, including old TSs and SDs, but I think the DS was one of his main pedals. I've AB'd a MIJ DS-1 and a MIT DS-1, the MIJ was significantly warmer. Probably was the opamp, but the difference was quite noticeable.

Re: Ibanez Tube Screamer vs. X

Lynch had the DS-1 on his pedalboard in 1997 and around thereabouts. Every other time, mostly, it has been a TS808 ever since Under Lock and Key. Before that it was an EQ. Before that it was a Dallas Rangemaster.

Even though I modded my SD-1 to TS808 specs, I still prefer a SD-1 over any TS or variant. That's just the sound I like. Luckily I can just drop my Wylde OD in the chain for the Super Overdrive sounds because it's a clone of one anyway. ;)

I'm not a Vai fan and I'm just going on memory...Most of us change pedals, guitars, and amps like we change underwear! :D
