Ibnez PU Swap Pink Floyd Tone

I have an Ibanez 542R Strat style guitar. I know very little about this guitar as far as which PUs it has although I am pretty sure they are stock. I play hard rock and metal and I know this guitar will not sound as good as my Gibson Explorer for playing this type of music if the PUs were switched out. The PUs currently in this guitar seem to have a shrill type sound and are their rather blah. I saw a Pink Floyd cover band and loved the tone of their guitar it was a fender and I have no idea what type of PUs were in it. What would be a good set of replacement PUs for this guitar? Any PUs out there that capture that Pink Floyd type of sound?

Re: Ibnez PU Swap Pink Floyd Tone

The two most likely pickup sets used by a Pink Floyd tribute band would be;
1) EMG DG-20 pre-packed set (3x EMG-SA pickups, -SPC and -EXG active tone controls)
2) Seymour Duncan SSL-5, SSL-1 RP/RW, SSL-1.

The bad news for you is that the EMG rig requires three control knobs on the top of the guitar. In my opinion, the EMG-SPC mid booster is more important than the -EXG Expander.

On the concert DVD "Pulse", second guitarist Tim Renwick plays what looks like a Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster or a Clapton Signature model. These had Lace Sensor pickups. The Clapton model has an onboard active midboost PCB.

Re: Ibnez PU Swap Pink Floyd Tone

I can highly recommend the DG20 set. I use SAs and SPC controls in two of my Strats and can get the 87-94 Gilmour tones with ease.

If you end up swapping them out, PM me about the pickups coming out if you want to sell them. I've been looking for a set of those...

I am seeing a pic of a Radius after ages. I think Funkfingers says would work well.

You are too kind.

Slight revision to my previous suggestions.
1) EMG-S pickups + EMG-SPC mid boost.
2) Seymour Duncan SSL-6T, SSL-2 RP/RW, SSL-2. (The Ibanez fingerboard radius is on the flat side. These pickups have equal length pole pieces.)

I think the best pickup combo for Floyd sounds is STK-4 neck and middle, and STK-S6 neck. I have the EMGs and I've done the Fat 50s/CS69/SSL-5 thing, and the stacks are just a noiseless version of the best of the Black Strat sounds. Awesome pickups.
