Ideas for a Tele

Hey guys.

I've recently been thinking about getting a good Telecaster. I've recently come into some money and I'm thinking about getting a Gordon Smith Telecaster made.

The thing is, I love the sound of a good P90 pickup, but I also like a 'traditional' Tele bridge tone too. Is there anyway way I can compromise between the 2? Or maybe install a traditional Tele bridge along with a P90 just after the bridge plate to try and have 2 bridge pickups? Would this last idea even work? lol

The neck pup will probably also be a P90 too :)

Thanx for any info guys.

You could use a Tapped Quarter Pounder in the bridge. To my ears, it sounds like a twangy P-90. then you could use it tapped too for the more traditional Tele bridge pickup tone...

The tapped Quarter Pounder sounds good, I don't think it's possible to have 2 bridge pickups, one would obviously be puched up to the middle pickup position (although Steve Morse sure crams a lot in there). It is apparently possible to have a P-90 and a traditional Tele bridge (best pic I could find!):

The Will Ray Jazz-O-Caster has Jazzmaster pups, which sound nothing like P-90's...but it does prove that a P-90 can be put there!

Does anyone have anything to say to actually help Brow, or are we just gonna do this to boost our post count?!

I think I did right after Brow's initial post that started the thread. You know the one... It was right before your post. The one that said:

Teles are for wimps :)

But I knew you were kidding. :13:

Re: Ideas for a Tele

At the risk of spoiling the fun, I'd suggest the Jerry Donahue Tele lead. I have one paired with a Phat Cat at the neck, and when you roll the tone back it gets pretty P90ish, and full up it's plenty bright. It's slightly overwound, so it can keep up with the PC or any reasonable vintage-style P90.

Thanx for the replies guys.

As I was writing the thread, the idea of a Tapped Quarter Pound in the bridge did cross my mind but as I'm new to Tele's, I thought I'd get your opinions on it too :)

I think I'm gonna go for a Phat Cat neck because then I could always change it out for a regular humbucker if I didn't like the sound of it :)

TO, I know you like Tele's really so you can stop the charade ;)

Thanx again for the opinions guys.

I think a phat cat neck is a great idea.

For the bridge, go with a standard tele pickup.

That way, you have p90 tone for the neck, and tele tone for the bridge. The best of both worlds methinks. :)

P.S. ANOTHER GUITAR????????? :D (just kidding... by the way, buy me one too)
