i'm guessin' there should be a whole lot more people sayin', "eartraining".

Hey Foamy... would learning theory prior to ear training be a better idea than ear training before learning theory?

I'd say leaning songs. It kinda includes everything mentioned. Just pick songs that force you to step up your game.

But besides learning songs, I'd say speed. I'm doing alright on everything else but speed and technique at high speed is something I really lack in. Took theory for four years already, so glad I did.

Learning things together is the best way. Learning to spell all different types of triads (i.e. major, minor, diminished, augmented) is great, but even better if I can play u a note, and you can instantaneously sing those 4 types from that same note.
Knowing what a b6 major chord is great. But, being able to spot one when a song is playing on the radio, is even better.
I always think, not much sense learning the theory, if i really can't hear it.

Thanks for the advice... very very sound. I wouldn't have thought of it! :)

Such a long thread when there is no sensible answer to your question. What is the purpose? What are your goals? What are you trying to achieve?

If I didn't play in my band for one year, I'd focus on different latin rythms. Chacha, rumba, samba etc. I've been attending a latin dance course recently and I like that feel and temperament very much.

Another idea would be a heavy ear training by venturing deep into the fourth note principle.

Always gotta dig into some more theory.

It would have to be speed or phrasing.... I'm partially satisfied with my phrasing at lower speeds but I want to be able to shred too.
