The internet in general has made it so much easier to discover what something is worth that it's hard to stumble upon randomly underpriced items. Well, that and the fact that most people assume that anything old must be a collector's item. I was in a bunch of junk shops this weekend looking for some foley items (I'm the TD for an audio theater company) and saw more than a few near-worthless guitars marked up to well over their market price.

The days of finding a $200 64 strat in bone mint condition, in its original case in some old ladies attic are long gone.
^^^^^ True story circa 1988. My brother didn't have the cash so he tells his buddy. Yeah, not me, his buddy. The guy could barely play guitar too. Wound up splittin' town a few years later and my brother never saw him again. Guess what I won't let HIM live down.
The days of finding a $200 64 strat in bone mint condition, in its original case in some old ladies attic are long gone.

i once came across a Pawn Shop in a small remote town in BC Canada... think the town was Grand Fort.... anywyas they had a ton of gear... owner said the only people in there to buy guitar stuff is the same 2-3 players in town... other then that he only gets the odd visitor that buys guitar stuff...
no real vintage axes but some nice stuff for cheap.... i ended up buying a bunch of pedals off him for $20 each.... mostly older BOSS and an MXR Dyna Comp from the 70's

I haven't scored much recently in pawn shops, but I've had a fair share of lucky finds.
Marshall JCM900 100W head. $425
Marshall Master Volume 30 combo at Goodwill....$25
Risson 80's boutique Marshall that was my main amp at 15. $260
Fender silverface Showman head $150 with no tubes or way to test it.
some Boss pedals for $30 a piece....a lucky find.
One time, I negotiated a deal with a pawnshop owner for a 50W Hiwatt from the 70's, and went to get the $550. I came back and he said it was spoken for, and didn't have it on the floor anymore. I think he realized it was worth more or called the owner of it's pawn ticket, or something. I was bummed I didn't get to walk away with that one!

HAHAHAH you guys are actually COMPLAINING?? A pawn shop in Edinburgh has a Jackson DR3 for 900 pounds. They cost 299 quid brand new. In Europe pawn shops just don't have musical instruments, and it's impossible to get any deals anyway. I only wish I lived in the US as a musician

My ultimate guitar wet-dream (and probably everybody else's too) would be to find an original 'burst being flogged by some old lady clearing out her attic. Of course, with what those things are worth now, this poses an obvious moral dilemma. Do you rip off the old lady, figuring she'll never live long enough to enjoy the money she'd get if she knew what it was worth. Or do you say f*ck it, give her 200 quid and blast out some Joe Walsh riffs all the way home... I dont think I could turn my pretty head and walk away!
