See, we should have made this clear at the start of the poll - are you choosing for comfort, sound, aesthetics, or something else?

For everything else, give me a Telecaster, please.

Yeah, I agree. I didn't even bother voting because I'm not really sure what sense we're discussing things in.

Good point. We've got guys basing this on all kinds of different things. To me, if you can only have one guitar, tone trumps. It should do at least one thing great, not a lot of things 'okay.' The other things about a guitar you can get used to, but if the tone isn't your favorite, it doesn't matter how comfortable it is, it still isn't the one that will inspire you to play your best.

Maybe that explains most of those weird Strat votes... Whew.

Re: If you could only have ONE guitar body style, which would it be and why?

I just noticed, PRS and super strat are grouped together. What's up with that? I have a PRS Santana, and it's basically a DC LP. It has nothing to do with a super Strat.

Re: If you could only have ONE guitar body style, which would it be and why?

I cannot vote on the poll, because semi hollow and hollow are lumped together. Yet Explorer, SG, V, and Jazzmaster have a category each. And Superstrat and PRS being lumped together makes no sense to me either. Not only are they not alike, but that category doesn't even need to be there, since Superstrats are, well, Strats, and PRS guitars are largely LP based.

I agree with you Rick about having the right guitar in one's hand...Also on those nights where the tone and effects and people are having a good time, man does it make for a fun evening!

It just does seem like an awful lot of players use strats though! All last month I was on a LP kick and I Love playing that guitar...Ever since I picked up a 23,000 65 Strat in Chicago though,I went right back to my strat again...Oddly or ironically enough,it's the sunburst one!

Here's that 65 strat...Just felt nice....And EXPENSIVE! Lol....Don't ask me why I wasn't smiling? I actually looked pretty tired! ;o)

And here's the strat I'm currently working on...New rosewood neck over maple, small vintage headstock, new headstock decal, and this one has the 9.5" radius which is easier to do the blues bends on...I do love the 7-7.25" radius for chords and it's comfy, but I hate that the notes can flat out in those upper registers with the curvier radius...This picture is with the original neck...A neck I will keep!

The neck is looking great and I managed to get the nice amber/honey color on it..It's been a project now for quite a few days!

Re: If you could only have ONE guitar body style, which would it be and why?

I believe the original intention of the question was asking about body style,
not the merits of one particular guitar over another, but the versatility of one
design over the rest.

Tele's can cover the entire spectrum of form and function better than any other body style!

May your follicles not grow inwards

A lot of guys in this thread seem to be saying something similar, but I don't understand. How does the body shape of a Telecaster (or most of these guitars) allow it to do certain things better than other shapes? When you could put a Strat bridge on a Tele-shaped guitar. Or a Tele bridge and pickups on swamp ash SG. Do you see what I'm getting at?

You can do any pickup and hardware mod to any body style, however,
and only my opinion, the tele can do it all and not look too dorky.

Three singles or a floyd on a LP just looks wrong, though any type of bridge
or pickups on a tele can work, at least to the eye and playability.

Don't get me wrong, I love every individual guitar, they each have their
own personalities and function. You can do alot to a strat shape, far less
to a LP or SG before the mods start to look out of place.
A V or Explorer with anything but two HB type pickups looks cheap, whereas
Seymour's Tele-Gib could have been a factory model.

I still advocate that one should have a diverstiy of guitar types in the stable,
but if limited to only one body style, the choice is easy..............TELE!!!!!

I Own quite a few different guitars...Strats(many)....SG,LP,335 and 2 Teles...I play whatever my mood tells me...I like switching things up and not just being stuck on just 1 guitar all the time!

I think we all agree on that. I've got most shapes mentioned in the poll
and it's amazing how one reacts to each individaul guitar.

A guitar hareem is the only solution:headbang:

Re: If you could only have ONE guitar body style, which would it be and why?

Superstrats...they're more comfortable, ergonomic and versatile than anything else I've played. You get more varied pickup configurations (h-h, s-s-h, h-s-h) I also think they're sleeker & cooler looking...and the finishes available are limitless, from more trad flame/bursts to awesome/weird textures & graphics...

Obviously Dean ML model and Jazzmaster/ Mustang/ Jagstang are accidents of birth.

That's because you are worried about dropping that 23 thousand dollar guitar! Ha..ha..

Yeah you're probably right....Come to think of it.... ;o) I was also thinking...Does this 23k strat make me play any better? Not really...Would be a shame to own a guitar that I'd be afraid to take out of my home in fear of losing it..

Responses:

1) Too many. If only someone would show them how to EQ them we'd be all set.

2) Not smiling? That's the same look I have when I hold a Strat (and quickly hand it to someone else).

Re: If you could only have ONE guitar body style, which would it be and why?

I had to vote Explorer. Perfect balance, sitting or standing, and great upper fret access. Of course, you can't lean it up against anything because it won't stand, but you can't sit with a V unless you like the classical position, LPs have bad upper fret access, SGs feel too small, hollows/semihollows are generally too big for my T Rex arms, Teles/Strats/Superstrats/PRS always want to sit perpendicular to the body...

...I have to admit to actually never having played a Jazzmaster or Jag or anything like that. I know, I know. I just haven't gotten around to it.

Re: If you could only have ONE guitar body style, which would it be and why?

To be quite honest I'd never ever buy a pointy shape guitar.
Vs, Explorers, Dean ML etc.
I suppose in that sense I'm more into 'traditional' shapes like the Strat, Tele, Les Paul (although I'd prefer something with a tummy cut, so not the ACTUAL Gibson Les Paul body, but I still don't mind the overall look of a Les Paul)
I voted the super strat and I still see it as a pretty traditional shape as far as bodies goes. Strat was a very close second as far as the vote went.

As has been said in this thread, it's more or less just based on that old classic body with a bit more of a deeper cutaway and sometimes some other features that enhance comfort ever further.
Comfort is a big thing for me and super strat bodies have always been super comfortable and quite ergonomic.

Also, I agree with Blueman, Don't understand the PRS being paired with super strats. It's definitely closest to a DC LP but ultimately it's own style
