It turns out Metallica is not a fictitious name.

Years ago, back in the 80's, I was on a trip with my parents, when we stopped by a presidential birthplace/home in Iowa (Hoover?). Sitting on a table was an old dusty book with Latin words in the title. One of them was 'metallica'. I assume it means 'metal' in Latin:

Re: If you didn't like Monster Cables already...

Without slamming Monster Cables for perceived pricing and quality issues I will say this much. Monster Cables argument in that article is that they have spent millions of dollars over the years convincing people that their products are a top end, premium product and that perception is highly tied into their brand name. The MC lawyer says so in a quote in that article. I am not saying that their products are not the end all in high end audio and visual cables, only that this is the perception they market.

Their position is that if enough people use the word Monster in their names and marketing it will dilute their "premium" position in the marketplace.

I remember a simular lawsuit 25 years ago or so between Domino Sugar and Dominoes Pizza and the sugar companys claim was that people would either associate or confuse the two companies and they lost. The judge in the case basically stated that no one was going to confuse sugar with pizza and the logos were different so it wasn't a trademark violation.

But we all know that in todays lawsuit happy world you can find a judge that will sign off on almost anything whether it has merit or not. I for one can tell the difference between Monster Garage, Monsters Inc and Monster Cables but I am a rocket scientist. My guess is that someone out there believes that most people aren't as smart as me and cannot tell the difference.

Anyone for double cream exposed bobbins?

Re: If you didn't like Monster Cables already...

That is nuts! Maybe Tojo Films in Japan ought to sue THEM for stealing the name they originated when they created MONSTER ZERO! :laugh2:

Re: If you didn't like Monster Cables already...

the real problem is that we allow lawsuits like Monster Cables' to go forward at all, instead of just laugh their a$$e$ out of court. :)

if you name your company "Monster Cable", then they can sue you. Anything else, well, just forget about it. ... monster is just another word in the dictionary, like "windows".

A little common sense would go a long way.

Of course, that's just my humble opinion.

There's a company out of New York State called "Cordex." I tried some of their cables and really liked them. We just bought a whole shipment of their stuff and we're cabling the whole SD NAMM booth with Cordex. Nice cables. Nice folks.

We've bench tested a lot of cables. The lowest distributed capacitance was found in regular Mogami cables.

I noticed the other day that there are regular Mogami instrument cables available:
Mogami instrument cables

they don't seem outrageously priced, either

Re: If you didn't like Monster Cables already...

Well that tears it. Monster's durability has always been spotty in my case and that's why I switched to Planet Waves... but this is just ridiculous. Monster is picking on corporations that have nothing to do with Monster Cable or it's product (i.e. Disney) and smaller businesses that have never even heard of the company and specialize in totally unrelated goods (Snow Monster, Monstervintage.com). The line about trying to defend the name and product repuation is total bullcrap. What they're doing is cementing a rep as a money-hungry, vicious, manipulative company by implementing a series of bizarre lawsuits against companies that use the word "monster" in some form, claiming that there's some sort of association with them.

MONSTER MONSTER MONSTER MONSTER!!!

Hopefully that'll get someone's attention over at Monster Cable to take a few minutes and explain themselves here. I mean hey if Mike Molenda can do it then someone over there ought to.

As of this point forward I'm gonna refrain from purchasing anything made by Monster Cable. PW are turing out to be better cables anyway... and there's other good brands available as well. Mogami makes great stuff and is in Monster's price range... Zaolla makes killer high end stuff too.

Re: If you didn't like Monster Cables already...

If you want to do some damage to Monster then don't boycott....

Buy their cables used and destroy them. Use them as tie-downs on your car. Let your little sister have one for jumping rope. Walk the dog with one.

...and when it breaks bring it to the shop and make them give you another one.

After you do this sixty or seventy times you'll start to get past the point financially where Monster is making any money and are now losing it.

This laqsuit is frivilous and arrogant. It's not the worst abuse of what "branding" has come to in reference to copyrights and trademarks, but it's pretty bad. The fact that they've gone after other companies which obviously, to anyone with half a brain, they have nothing to do with is just arrogant.

How would someone confuse the products that Monster Cable makes with the movie Monsters Inc? Same with Monster Garage....

Garbage. Take a whack at these demons now or expect for them to be your only option for cables in the future.

Re: If you didn't like Monster Cables already...

I agree with a lot of you. Thise kind of corporate swagger and c0ck-swinging just makes me mad. I'm never going to support that company again. We were at odds with each other anyway... they caught me lovin' up a couple of livewires, and things have never been the same since. ;)

I mean, come on... If you're gonna sue ANYone, sue the cat! Then at least we could PROVE that your completely insane! If the prices of the cables don't prove it already. REALLY... $50 for a GUITAR cable? Eat me!

Re: If you didn't like Monster Cables already...

I wonder if I can take my cables to GC, one at a time, and claim they're all broken and demand my money back?

If the wire is sufficient gauge, I'm not sure the electrons care what the name on the package is.

do you guys really hear any difference in same size gauge wire? hahaha! I guess my ears are toast at 43. Sorry. I'll keep dropping insane money into things which have differences I can hear and appreciate.

Good gravy!

How did you hear about them? I can't find them with google or MSN search engines!

I've been telling people forever that monster cables are wayyyyyyy overpriced and are nothing special. If anyones looking for good quality check out mogami or canare cable.

Isn't mogami more expensive than monster? And yes, they are excellent cables. I wired all the ins and out of my dad's m-audio delta 1010 to his mixer using mogami's and they're great cables compared to monster..:smoker:

Re: If you didn't like Monster Cables already...

F*ck monster. I'll boycott them like I boycott Wal-Mart.
