If you had $1000 to spend...

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

Most of the guitars I see recommended aren't very versatile.

For Southern Rock to U2 you should look for a used Fender American Strat (or similar, possibly a used Carvin bolt) and put a humbucker in the bridge, possibly a Pearly Gates, and two SSL-1's or Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's in the neck and bridge. Wire the bridge bucker with either a push/pull or to auto tap in the bridge/mid position.

Another option would be get whatever type of guitar you like the best, i.e Les Paul, Fender, Tele, etc..., and put a pair of P-Rails with Triple Shot rings.

The Tele recommendations are good too, but I believe an HSS Strat will be the most versatile.

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

Do you retards even READ the posts? did you see me recommend a Les Paul? No - why? It wouldn't be a good choice.

Only electric, Southern to U2. I would get: A Midline Strat with a Floyd (as high end as you can go with the extra I mention), the Duncan Everything Axe set, and make sure it was wired to give me bucker and single coil tones.

One axe, done.

(I'm not ranting at people like sbecker etc....they obviously get it)

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

If I had a spare grand lying around in the gear fund and didn't already own one, I'd buy a used Gibson SG Classic in a heartbeat (and use the rest of the cash on a tonepros bridge, straplocks, and new strap).

I love my SG Classic. It's a wonderful guitar. Everyone I know who owns one (there are several here on this forum) love theirs as well.

One of the best Gibsons for the money, bar none.

Let's discuss this further.........

Southern Rock - Skynyrd, Allman Bros, etc - All PLay Les Pauls
U2 - Edge - also plays Les Pauls

SO if the OP's style ranges between those two, why not get a LP????

Oh I'm sorry. We must have forgotten that everything that you say is always the correct answer.

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

In the end it all comes down to what YOU like and what feels Comfortable to YOU. It doesn't matter what WE say, we can only guide you. VERSATILITY comes from within. I heard sick metal tones from a Fender amp and a Strat/tele, to the same effect I've heard great jazz from a Explorer and a Dual Rect. There are no boundaries in regards to gear. Certainly there are focal points, but I like I said your style will come out with whatever gear you choose.

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

I'm just throwing it out there, but you might want to buy some kinda cheap guitar, like maybe a Squier or more low-end Fender, and use the rest of the money making the upgrades that fit what you need. Or you could get a Fender Standard Strat, that should probably do it.

I don't want to be a jerk to you, but this is monumentally terrible advice.

To say an LP wouldn't be good for Southern Rock is like saying a car would be bad for driving.:butkick:

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

If it were me, I'd build a Warmoth custom. Probably a "VIP" body with korina, a rosewood neck with an ebony board, stainless frets, etc. I'd likely throw something like a Crazy 8 in the bridge and a Pearly Gates in the neck, a Gotoh Floyd and I might have some cash left over to buy strings. :)

If you think you could put together a Warmoth with those specs and have any cash left over for anything, you are a crazy person.

Not to go all type-A on you, but let's price out this project:

Korina VIP body, HH, recessed controls, floyd rout: $605
Clear gloss body finish (cheapest possible): $175
Indian Rosewood neck, ebony fretboard, stainless frets, floyd nut prep: $463
Gotoh Floyd: $170
Crazy 8: $80
PG neck: $70
Pots, caps, wire, shielding, screws, etc: let's call it another $100

Total cost, not counting any tools or assembly: $1,663.00

:laugh2: :laugh2: I had originally written it to be sarcastic, writing out that whole thing, only to suggest the Fender at the end, but I see how I sounded serious. No offense taken.

But I think it was IanBallard that just suggested building your own guitar with Warmoth parts or whatever. That sounds very fun, just as long as you know what you're doing when putting it together and very carefully planning out your budget and the costs of electronics and stuff.

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

If it were me looking for versatility in my tone the way you had it described I would take this (MIM to keep the costs down)

Fender_Telecaster_52_reissue.jpg

and put this in the neck

DV019_Jpg_Regular_360933.001_black.jpg

and this on the tail

Because those will give you a ton of different tones to work with. It sounds great for southern rock and you can get some really great fx textures out of it when you put pedals over that p90.

If you are not looking to mod a guitar I would just get a strat though.

Well, it depends. They have specials from time to time and you can get pickups used. I'm just throwing out possibilities of something close to $1000 that is personal. Obviously the OP may not want MY specs, but could come away with a nice (bolt on) guitar that is totally unique. I feel like building your own guitar is a great way to be personally connected to your ax. You're never going to pull a guitar off of a rack that has your sweat in the neck pocket, so to speak. :)

Skynyrd also used Strats; Sweet Home Alabama?
U2 is more known for their Strat tones

A Strat with a bucker in the bridge will get you in the ballpark of LP tone.
An LP with split buckers will never get you near a Strat tone.

It was about VERSATILITY. An LP, though the best guitar ever, isn't the most versatile. An LP with HSH config, a trem/floyd, and Jimmy Page push/pull wiring would be and if you find one let me know!

Personally, I'd rather not support big corporate businesses if I can help it. If you only have $1000 to spend... you could get a used Les Paul or something like a Carvin from a smaller maker. If you MUST have a set-neck, then you probably should buy a pre-made guitar. But if you desire a bolt-on, I just can't personally see myself spending $1000 for a Fender. Ever. Maybe a Wolfgang Special (for a $200 more) but it's not exactly your run-of-the-mill bolt-on guitar. It's really easy to build a bolt-on guitar if you have middle-school shop class capabilities with screw drivers, drills and sand paper and a little wood stain or spray paint. The soldering and wiring could be done by a pro for $50.

Hahahaha

OK, I didn't realize you were kidding. My bad. :)

I think I've been Mr. Negative enough in this thread now.

Having $1000 to spend on a new guitar is the best kind of "problem" to have...

Never said they didn't play Strats. Just bringing it up that an LP can be used for those specific styles.

Let me reiterate my point, gear is gear. Versatility comes from the inside. Sure gear will help, but it's all in the fingers and playing style. Look jazz, country, rock, fusion, funk, ska all have different playing styles that really heavily on how you play the strings.

I love rock. All genres. Classic, modern, hard, alt, pop rock, etc. My setup w/ my LP and VHT can cover those styles. My true style/sound will come out no matter what guitar or amp I use. Same could be said for anyone. versatility is another word for technique.

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

I would personally find a guitar you like and make it work for you. Then focus on technique and subtle nuances of those specific styles.
