If you had $1000 to spend...

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

I would personally find a guitar you like and make it work for you. Then focus on technique and subtle nuances of those specific styles.

Awesome point. I personally don't think a guitar full of pickups, coil-taps, phase switches and whatnot, make it any more "versatile" than a Les Paul Jr. with a single P-90, if the player is not up to par. Using effects, amp models and most importantly technique, you can make the simplest guitar sound like anything you want.

Also, this thread is a "what would YOU do" advice thread. Take it or leave it, but if you ask what WE would do, you aren't always going to get answers YOU want. Not every guitar player is good with tools and setups, so I don't expect my advice of a DIY guitar is applicable to everyone.

How about a MIK James Tyler Variax:

We have a winner! If you're only going to have ONE guitar and want the most versatility it can provide, this is a fabulous choice. These are well built, players guitars, and the modeling just puts it over the top in versatility.

Pair it with a POD HD and a Tech21 Power Engine.

Damn, now I have GAS.....again

I'd get a RR24M, black with white bevels. And I'd switch the EMG for a passive Duncan.

Re: If you had $1000 to spend...

The Variax is well-built. I don't know anything about them but assumed they weren't a 'serious' guitar.

The James Tyler ones are, yes. The previous versions weren't no, but the electronics were good. I have a bookmark of a guy who rips the guts from them and installs them in 'real' guitars but with the JT models it's moot now.

Either go on GC in the "used gear" or on Ebay and get a Gibson Thunderbird, I may have to wait.........but patience is a virtue!

Or a sweet used Trace head (AH350 and 4 x10 cab)

I don't think that would quite work out for what the original poster is asking.
