I got my Jr used for $500 at GC, it was about 4 or 5 months old at the time. Lots of deals out there, lots.

My guitar only accomodates humbuckers, so I'd get a set of these http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/railhammer-gnarly-90-humbucker-size-p90-pickup and spend the rest on a better amp.

It's a Mexican standard. I like it for what it is and want something new but good idea on the pickup swap

Take a look under the pickguard. Anything under five years old, you should find a rout big enough to accept a Fender Wide Range humbucker. (Some even cavities extend to where a middle position single coil would go.)

IMO, the stock MIM pickups leave much to be desired. A Vintage Stack STK-T1n would kill several birds with one stone. With high gain and the guitar's tone control rolled right down, you would get a rockin' P90-like lead sound. An SM-1n mini humbucker or a Filter'Tron style pickup is another smart option.

+1 I have a SM-1 in the neck of my Tele and it's amazing. Sort of in the middle of Strat, Humbucker, and P-90 tones.

Can you get one of those Epi 339's with the P90's for $500? If so, that's what I'd get.
