If you had to use one pickup....

If you had to use one pickup for the rest of your guitar playing days, what would it be?

For me, it would be the Alnico II Pro neck pickup. I use several of them, and while I have different bridge pickups in each guitar, I always go back to the Alnico II Pro in the neck. I use the neck position maybe 80% of the time, and while I don't go for the Slash-y sound and guitar, it is a warm sounding pickup that suits my playing well.

Re: If you had to use one pickup....

That's a tough one. Right now, I'd have to say the Screamin' Demon. I have it in my Baretta and in the neck and bridge of my Frankenstrat. I can get a lot out of it. One thing I have never done is heard it split. That pickup simply works for me.

Re: If you had to use one pickup....

I honestly don't think I could. I like trying out new pickups too much!

If I really had to pick one, it would definitely be a bridge pickup. I rarely ever use the neck pickup, TBH.

Nowadays, I'm really liking the Black Winter. I think the pickup I've liked for the longest time is the EMG 85, though. It's kinda my comfort zone. If all else fails, I know I can get it to sound at least decent. So it would either have to Black Winter or EMG 85 for me.

Re: If you had to use one pickup....

If only one it would have to be a Fishman Open Core Classic...just because of the many sounds available...it the question was "one set" instead it would be a Pearly Gates bridge...Fender Texas Special M...SSL-1 N...

Re: If you had to use one pickup....

I could get by with a nice sounding vintage wind strat neck pickup for most of what I do.

Re: If you had to use one pickup....

I use my bridge pickups 95% of the time. I really like the Seth Lover in my '77 Les Paul Standard. However, I just put a Pearly Gates bridge in my '17 Les Paul Traditional in place of the Burstbucker 3+ that was stock and it sounds fantastic. It seems to be able to rock just a bit harder than the Seth but has a similar tone. Since I play mostly 70's and 80's hard rock, the Pearly might be the winner.

Re: If you had to use one pickup....

Most versatile set I have used has been the 59/Custom Hybrid bridge with the Sentient in the neck. Run a 3 way and split switches and there is not much tonal ground I cant cover with that set up.

Re: If you had to use one pickup....

I love the Seymour Duncan SH11 in the bridge position with coil tap. Great clean or with OD.

Re: If you had to use one pickup....

It is hard to just say one pickup, but for the bridge position I like the AT-1 if I had one choice. For rock music, it is pretty versatile and musical.

That custom/59 hybrid seems to be a home run too!

Re: If you had to use one pickup....

I'd go for a JB Jr. It's good for me mainly because my ears are used to it and it's not a single coil (I haven't found a single coil that I feel sounds good in my hands). It also has something to it that separates it from full sized humbuckers which I can only describe by using the word focussed.

Re: If you had to use one pickup....

Gibson brand P90.

They are in my 330, my Junior, and my Melody Maker. I couldn't give those up.

That said, a classic Tele bridge pickup is RIGHT THERE with the P90. I only gave the slight edge to the P90 because I could not imagine not owning the guitars that I have with them. I am heavily sentimentally connected to all three of them. Two of them were inherited from my father when he died. The other one is one of the earlier guitars that I bought myself when I "branched out," after owning nothing but my Japanese Strat for about 12 or 13 years.
