I second this. Throw in PTB wiring and a coil split, and this pickup could do anything.

Agreed! It’s hot, clear, crazy dynamic, responsive, and works really well in various switch coil configurations. Plus if you use your volume and tone knobs there is nothing it can’t do

1 pickup, nothing else? I guess I'd have to go for flexibility. P-Rails. Great P-90 sound, very good bright, weirdly PAFish parallel sound, fat hot mismatched coil series sound, and a rail single sound for variety. I'd prefer a set, but apparently Mincer's postapocalyptic dimension got taken over by hair metal and punk fanatics. Is such a world really worth surviving in, though?

Anyone who read my recent thread about it already knows my answer: Super Distortion! It just works so well with my amp, my playing style, and my tastes.
I have happily played quite a few other pickups over the years but if I choose just one it's the DP100. Great for clean and rockabilly, too. (Scoff away if you haven't tried it!)

If I was limited to a bridge pickup...it would probably be a Custom Custom. But it would kill me and probably stop me from playing guitar if I had to deal with a bridge pickup as my only one forever.

Not in my case!! 59/Custom Hybrid bridge and A sentient neck will cover bout anything you can throw at it from metal to twangy country.
Both split middle pos on the 3 way in my Carvin DC 127 through my Mesa Subway Rocket and running just a Boss CS 3. Hows THIS for a country lead tone?

I'm one of those unusual folks that use the neck pickup for lead and bridge pickup for rhythm.

There are lots of techniques to vari rhythm timbres... Muting, pick thickness, hand position... but I have to have thickness on the low end, plenty of highs and articulation for my lead style...

So if I had to choose one, and glad I don't have to, it would probably be a firebird neck pup in a strat or telecaster.

I wasn't sniping about players who can get along with 1 pickup [and you plainly can't, as you keep mentioning two... (;], but rather joking about what sort of horrible situation would only permit others to use one. Hair metal/punk apocalypse was first that came to mind. Mohawked or poodle-haired cannibals eating anyone whose guitar has too many pickups... I may be slightly overwhimsical due to snow mold allergies. Yay late winter...

I think that would be a tough choice for me. I like a lot of different pickups, but in my go to guitars it comes down to one of two pickups, either the classic DiMarzio Super Distortion (I have five of these stretched out in three guitars) or the DiMarzio Transition bridge (I have those in two guitars).

Without a doubt, no question about it, I would pick the neck P-Rails. For me, a pup has to be versatile, and the P-Rails fills that requirement in spades. I've learned how to get the best out of it with mag swaps and physical orientation in the guitar. With Triple Shots it's a no-brainer.
