If you haven't owned this pedal

Re: If you haven't owned this pedal

Tubescreamers are probably the most underrated part of the modern metal sound, you have no idea how often I would get students or just see people on forums saying 'Well I bought [High Gain Amp] and [Pointy Guitar with EMGs] but I can't get that tight chugga chugga djent chugga djent', when the key is really just a tubescreamer, set with the gain fairly low and the volume high to shape the sound.

I don't really understand the appeal of getting an Ibanez or Maxon one.. everyone and their mother has replicated that circuit, and most brands have made them even better, even cheaper. For just a bone stock TS808 sound, you can get a Mooer or an EHX copy of the circuit for under $80, and then theres.. every other pedal brand has their own take on the circuit with improvements.

I'm a bit more partial to overdrives with a fuzzy edge to it.. EWS Fuzzy Drive, or the upper gain settings on the Klones, most recently I tried the Lovepedal Dover Drive and I'm definitely in love.

Re: If you haven't owned this pedal

I have a sparkle drive from voodoo labs I'm in love with. It's basically a 808 with an eq and a clean knob (to blend the 808 with your bypassed sound).

Re: If you haven't owned this pedal

My 808 is on almost the entire gig slamming my 800. give me one of those and a JCM800 and I'm happy. Tried so many others and for some reason its just the one for me...somehow doesn't stop me from still trying others and taking a loss when I sell it back.

Just to be a ******....the swollen pickle is not a TS 'clone' by any stretch, its a fuzz.

No offense taken. Whichever Way Huge is….

The impact of high output power and the immediacy it brings is often underestimated, as is a juice goose into the preamp vs the preamp itself being up.

Re: If you haven't owned this pedal

I owned the Fulldrive. It did the boost thing etc but was too transparent. Even with my 808 set at 0 gain when I kick it on the tone changes drastically. I much prefer the eq change that it entails.

Re: If you haven't owned this pedal

I used an original 808 when my old band recorded our album. It was great, and if my friend who owns it ever gave it to me, I'd gladly accept it, however, I prefer my MXR Custom Badass Overdrive just a little bit more. It has a slightly different voice when the BUMP switch is on and the 100Hz knob turned up a bit, and that voice is just a bit better for my solo boosting needs.

Re: If you haven't owned this pedal

I used a TS of some sort..9s..10s..an 808 ( I liked my 10 better for some reason)with my Gibsons for alot of years, along with SODs (prefer for strats). In my old age they both have worn on me for some reason. their impact is huge, but I gravitate towards other vintage tonality od/dist pedals nowadays.

Re: If you haven't owned this pedal

I love my MXR Custom Badass into my '62 Champ. It's a great tone!

Re: If you haven't owned this pedal

I have an Ibanez OD855 Overdrive II which makes my shred sticks, JTK2 and LP copy sound great on a VB30 transistor amp, but when I connect it to my Sovtek MiG-50 amp, they ROCK !!
I like to believe the OD855 comes close to the TS808, plus I got it for free :-)

Ever noticed grease stains look like new when you rub them with butter ?

Re: If you haven't owned this pedal

Ive been looking for an 808 for a while. I want to pickup a used one. They are hard to find. I bought a Maxxon 808 but didnt really like it. I think the Ibanez sounds better and more natural at least to my ears it does.

Let me live with mine for a couple of gigs and then maybe we could trade.
