Re: If You Owned A 300.000 Guitar?

To the guy who said sell it to buy a custom guitar. Why? I would play that sucker on stage just to show the world and everyone in it that my guitar is better than theirs. You might as well keep it just to have it.lol. Im not knockin on anyone.lol.This is great.

uh?you show your 450 thousand dollars guitar to an ausiance that have no clue ,and for the ones who have clue and want to steal it!!!There si no appeal for me for
a)to play an LP
b)To playn an old LP
c)Playing a 59
and the most important
d)not getting 5 killer custom guitars ,some custom amp ,the best effects rig ,a car ,a cool holliday etc...

Re: If You Owned A 300.000 Guitar?

I really don't get you guys that say "sell it and buy a ton of gear I'd use!" THe Burst will appreciate, the custom gear will depreciate. I understand that it might not be your ideal cup of tea, but at that point you've got to treat it closer to a gold bar bullion and less like a guitar. I can open the vault everyday and admire the gold bar, just like I can play the Burst, but you've got to think of in potential value. Actually, it's closer to private issue bonds, right? It may go belly up, but very good odds say every year you'll get a return. Rate the investment vs. other investments of that value and decide. It being one of the most desirable guitars is really just a bonus.

Re: If You Owned A 300.000 Guitar?

I would work on the following premise. To be worth that sort of money, the guitar would have to be in mint condition, because it would only have that value as a collectible. For a 50 year old guitar to be in very good condition, that means it would have been cased and not played for most of its life. From experience, that would make this guitar virtually useless as a guitar, it would most likely be dead in the water.

Next, it is unlikely that your target buyer will be a musician. He is more likely to be a lawyer, or an architect or an accountant. It is highly likely that he won't be able to play guitar. He will be buying it as an investment and to look at, so every time you play it, you would have to treat it like a new born baby. I can't think of anything worse (Well, there's shark attack, but stay with me here!) than having to play a guitar without letting the pick touch it, whilst wearing your lint free body suit, and removing all other objects from the room. How very Rock.

So basically, this is a useless instrument. However, I could find plenty of uses for 300 grand. I don't need another guitar, but I would be tracking down a well played maple neck L series Strat for 25 grand and a nice old Tele just for fun. The rest would go towards a nice home, where I can sit and hammer the crap out of my highly playable guitars, while I contemplate how the hell I ever owned a $300,000 guitar.

Cheers...........................wahwah

Re: If You Owned A 300.000 Guitar?

Hey, you guys have good points. I am pulling my comment about the throwing it in peoples faces thing and agreeing on the basis that it should get SOLD.

Re: If You Owned A 300.000 Guitar?

This guy's got the right idea. Keep track of the instrument's yearly appreciation, and if/when it begins to appreciate at a rate equal or less than the rate of inflation, unload it. As a musical instrument it isn't worth that kind of money, so I'd treat it as an investment, just as though it were a stock or bond. Unload it when the market is in your favor.

yes, and maybe just DESTROY ALL OTHER '59s to drive the value up instantly to unrealistic heights!

Re: If You Owned A 300.000 Guitar?

What it really amonts to is these high $ purchases that have driven the price of these great guitars way out of reach for the people that can really appriciate them..... us Guitar players.

Its interesting how these "collectors" will view the guitar. They will look at the laquer checking and question Does it look right? They will question the electronics Does it look all original? They will question. Is it Black lightable? This can go on for 45 minutes, maybe an hour and not one time do they question the most important aspect.... How does it play and how does it sound? After all its a guitar and a guitar was meant to be played to make music. I understand its investment value, but modifieing a guitar like this would just not happen in present time. Anyone who is dropping 300K + on a guitar probably has a roomful of "players" This guitar will probably be only admired in groups of friends to show off and maybe a pro who owns one will use it in the Studio.

Mark Knopfler uses his 58' quite a bit. It is virtually stock except for a refret. Jimmy Page when touring hires a security guard to watch his guitar.

I'd have a raffle here at the SDUGF and give it to someone FREEEEE!!!!!! And I would ship it UPS. ¬¬

Re: If You Owned A 300.000 Guitar?

I don't know about y'all, but I could really use $300,000. Today. Not 10-20 years from now.

If he hired a security guard for his guitars anyhow, I'd understand that. Otherwise, forget it. Because great new guitars aren't rare enough that anyone needs to tour with a vintage piece that needs extra protection.

If Page puts out the word that he wants a great new Les Paul, it'll almost come to him. Most music stores have customers who get a first shot at the best guitars anyhow. The best gets pulled aside, and the rest go out on the floor.

What's the story behind Ronnie Montrose's burst getting stolen- off the stage, while the concert was going on?

Re: If You Owned A 300.000 Guitar?

For me: it's a Gibson Les Paul a.k.a zero attraction. 300 grand could get me through university, some custom guitars and amps, licence, a car, touring van, and some money in the bank!! All f which would be more rewarding than owning a '59 Les Paul.

Great road crew huh? Sounds like an inside job to me.

When did that happen? I think someone said that Gary Moore owned one of Ronnie Montrose's guitars. Was it stolen off his stage?

Re: If You Owned A 300.000 Guitar?

If it was me, I'd hold it at least until it hit $1 million. Which the way things are going would take about 5 minutes. I thought I'd be dead before any of them hit a half $mil, but some of them already have.

If the tone/feel/vibe was really that great, I would also play it. A lot. Maybe not at gigs, but certainly at home. Yeah, be careful but not so careful that you can't enjoy playing it. It's still a guitar and still meant to be played, and if it's that great a guitar than it's meant to be played greatly. Amen...

Re: If You Owned A 300.000 Guitar?

Most of you young dudes need to seriously rethink your thought processes. That guitar, and honestly, im not certain if you know this, but that '59 burst is one of the most preffered investments in the entire market. I think thats what that other dude here was trying to say to you and you didnt pick up on it. All i hear is "sell sell sell". For some reason you think that now, that you are in your prime, that you need that money more than anything.Hell, you are young, have almost unlimited energy, and nearly your entire lives ahead of you to forge a solid future, yet you want to run out and sell an investment that actually really isnt even available beacuse its so rare. I could understand if maybe you have absolutely no place to keep it. thaTS WHY I WAS ASKING ABOUT VAULTS , BECAUSE I DONT HAVE A SECURE PLACE TO KEEP ONE EITHER IF I HAD ONE. But if you think money is suddenly going to become more available or easier to come by as the years go by, or if you think that car you want to buy is going to last 10 years or wahtever...dudes, i would suggest you try and learn a little about investment strategy. That 300-400K guitar may be worth one miullion dollars when you are 40. If you inversted the same amount, it may or may not be worth maybe 650K. ever think of that? YOU dudes need to start geting your prioritires straight maybe . I'm not presumoing to lecture you by any means. Most of you probably have a brighter more secure future than i ever will, but You arent adolescents any longer..you are men, and you need to be businessmen first before selling out your future because you dont want to put in the hard work right now , when you can.

If I owned a 300k guitar, I'd do whatever I wanted with it b/c the only way I'd ever own a guitar worth that much is if I was filthy rich. For people who spend that kind of money on guitars, 300 g's is chump change. Now if I was that rich, I'd have a cpl of 58 and 59 LP's, some old strats and teles, a buncha PRS custom shops, vintage Martins, a whole slew of vintage amps and fx.

Now on a more realistic note, if I were to find a 300k guitar for cheap and bought it or was given one, I'd sell that sucker quick. My college would be paid for, as well as all my expenses for likely the next 10 yrs. For us normal people that's entirely too much coin for a guitar.

I would urge you to have hung onto that investement at all costs. theres no way it would benefit you to sell it now.youre looking for the easy way out.rich people didnt get to where they wrere by liquidating prime investments.Did you ever hear of men working their way throiugh college by cheance? Grueeling, maybe , but right now you have the energy to do it, ewhoile you are young...in the end you have part of your retitement investment secure . I was the same friggin way unfortuanetley. Tommorow doesant exist at your age. you arent liable fot it...but you will be held liable!
