Im about to order my replacement tubes...final concerns.

Okay so ive got the cash finally and am close to putting an official order through to Bob at Eurotubes for replacement JJ tubes for both my ENGL and Mesa.

For the preamp tubes im getting JJ ECC83S's, and for the power section of the ENGL im getting JJ KT88's, and the power section of the Mesa im getting JJ 6L6GC's...all on Bobs recommendations. Also ill be getting a couple of high gain graded preamp tubes just to experiment with.

I wanted a couple of GT mullard reissues and a couple of EH preamp tubes to experiment with too but he says he doesnt carry them.

So i guess what im asking you guys is just to tell me what you think of the tubes and also is Bob good to deal with, because this will be my first internet/overseas transaction and im a little hesitant about doing things like that.

So yeah, what do you think?

Those tubes are great and yes; Bob is a great guy to do business with. Buy with confidence.

I'm curious as to why he suggested KT-88's for your ENGL. I'm sure they'll sound great, but wonder if biasing will be no different than using the 6L6's it's supposed to have. You'll be glad you retubed. Amps like yours beat the crap outta tubes and they start to peeter out after about a year. Use the tube boxes to put your old tubes in, for spares at gigs.

No offense, but why does Bob offer replacement tube advice? Doesn't he always recommend JJs?... after all, that's all he sells. There can't be that many different kind of model JJ tubes, right?

My ENGL actually has 6550's, not 6L6's, hence the KT88 recommendation.

Thats actually what i was thinking, no offence of course, but Bob really gives the JJ's a fantastic wrap, and while ive heard that these tubes really are fantastic the thought does cross my mind once in a while that some of his recommendations over other tubes may be a little bias (no pun intended ;) ).

What do people think about that?

Re: Im about to order my replacement tubes...final concerns.

I have a set of 6L6's (Budda) and had some E34L's (Marshall DSL) and am/was very happy with them. I've heard many folks happy with the EL84's as well. The pre amp tubes get alot of positive reviews, but get their share of negative reviews as well. I like them OK, I like others better, but as inexpensive as they are, you should get some to try out. Just like almost everything in a tube amp.....it all depends on the amp!! In all honesty, I haven't heard many negative things at all with any of the JJ power tubes. Good Luck.

Just get them, and you'll see why I love ENGL so much. About GD time you got the tubes bro! ;)

I've had nothing but good experiences dealing with Bob....and keep in mind I was a tube ho for that five month stretch I owned my Bivalve.

It all comes down to personal preference...but I really like the JJ's.

Re: Im about to order my replacement tubes...final concerns.

The JJ's are a great tube....highly recommended for Marshalls. The only reason I haven't ordered from Bob is simply the fact that JJ's are all he carries. He has s ton of knowledge about tubes, and especially JJ's...but that's all you can get. I'm just not a believer that JJ's are THE tube for every application. As soon as my Marshall gets back, I'm going to get a trio of those GT Mullards.

I just wouldn't limit myself to one type of tube if you want to try some others. I assume shipping cost is a concern, and you don't want to place 2 orders...right? If it were my $$ I would want to get ALL of the tubes I wanted to try from ONE source. You can get that done with other venders.

This is just my opinion, and I have nothing bad to say about Eurotubes, or about Bob. Everything I have heard about him is excellent. When I want a set of JJ's, that's who I'll call. If I want other tubes, I'll go elswhere.

YMMV
