I'm an amp repair GeniuS!!!!!!!!

Today i was jamming with some friends, and my amp was making me mad, it has had a buzzing problem for a while, 2 faulty pots, and a loose input jack. (it only has 2 knobs, kinda irritating).

Anyway. in the middle of the song i turned it off and took the back off. I tightened the jack, replaces the V2 preamp tube, and hit the pots with a screwdriver. I put it back together, and fired it up in time to play a solo.

Currently i can find nothing wrong with the amp, i fixed all three problems in the middle of a santana song :nana:

Re: I'm an amp repair GeniuS!!!!!!!!

I used to have a PA head that would fuzz up and fade out at random times. Usually kicking the thing would bring it back to life. One day the kicking trick stopped working...we opened it up and found a disconnected electrolytic cap hangin loose in there. Me and my drummer soldered it back in, and it worked again.

Gotta love things that are easy to fix ;).

i thought my amp just buzzed naturally, turns out it was just the Chineese Mullard i had in it, those tubes go out faster than any others i have tried. this one was dead in a month. gahhh.. total waste of 24 bucks

that's but it would have been cooler if it happened during a gig.

I think its cathrode biased. im running el84's rated to 7, i dont know why the mullard went out so fast, they sound good but i think they are pretty poor quality. i put an old sovtec in that i had around. its gotta be a 20 year old tube, and it glows much brighter and sounds better.

Re: I'm an amp repair GeniuS!!!!!!!!

glad you had good results

you *do* know how dangerous what you did was to your health, right?

now, maybe you jus ttyped in shorthand ... but i didnt read about any safety precautions you took in working on that amp .. like unplug it from the wall? ... lke safely discharge the caps? .. like use a rubber/plastic screwdriver? ....

there are lethal amounts of current stored up in an amp even if it is unplugged

please be careful young gun

I am glad it worked out for you SM. It is a good day when we can fix things ourselves.

Now that you can fix amps, if you were an enterprising young man, you would start a stand out next to the road. ;)

Yeah, ive looked it up before, i used rubber tools and never actually touched the inside of the amp with my hands.... ive been zapped by solid state amps before. learned my lesson good.

Re: I'm an amp repair GeniuS!!!!!!!!

Now that's the way I wanna go out..... On stage fixing a tube amp in the middle of a song! How cool is that? I bet the E.R. don't get too many of those! :scared:

Tom Scholtz was pretty good at that, there are alot of rumors about him fixing amps during concerts.
