I'm going to build a cloud guitar

so I can play along while I watch the Purple Rain movie in my bedroom.

It's pretty easy to find a lot of the specs about the guitar and different videos of people making them. My one question is that many people, including Dave Rusan who built the first one, call it a "neck-through" guitar. I don't think that's right. Just look at it, I can't see how it is like a Firebird with a single piece extending all the way through the neck and body and then adding wings?

I think they mean it's a set-neck, like an LP with a glued on neck. Am I wrong here? Anyone?

Anywho, should be a fun project. Thanks for any insight.

oh wow dude. Thank you. That's another layer. I wonder how you carve all that from a single piece. I better go watch that video end to end.

Yeah it had me confused too, because in the beginning on the video they show a full body with no neck, but later on it looks like the one they are showing was carved out of a single piece of wood. Just good matching I guess

oh that's not me! haha. That's just a pic of one in progress by Dave Rusan, the guy who made the first one. Looks like he does the neck through, slaps some wings on it and then must do another piece for the top which is what makes it look so clean from the front. Pretty smart.

i mean, in theory i could see how you could do it, but i sure as hell dont have tools to do it easily. a buddy of mine is a machinist so im guessing he could make it happen. what bridge are you thinking of using?

It's called prior planning. Let's face it, Rickenbacker has been doing it since the 60's with a bunch of their stuff. So did Gibson with the Firebird.
