I'm having mad GAS for a Gibson...

I'm having mad GAS for a Gibson...

I really dislike the pickup rings and toggle washer.
Matching with knobs would be better imho.
Gibsons SG also has a massive dislike for me, top mounted jack, i prefer the bottom or technically side if you will. Especially when the input is so close to the knobs.

Yeah thats one tiny thing I'd probably end up changing about it. Though, I don't think black rings would look good either. At least as long as it had covered pickups I'd keep the rings either tan or cream.

SG is too thin to do a side mount

Good looking guitar. From my perspective though, 2014 is pretty much a year where I will have to ignore their entire line up, because I refuse to have a guitar with that stupid inlay on the 12th fret.

Re: I'm having mad GAS for a Gibson...

I love it I would probably go cream on the rings and the poker chip but overall it is a nice axe.

Re: I'm having mad GAS for a Gibson...

I played one just like that a week ago. It was amazing! Played it through a Traynor amp, a newer model (looked like a Mesa or something).

Funny thing is, those pickup rings look a little weird in photos, but in person they are a really nice match for the finish colour of the guitar. Hell of a bargain at $899. The one I played had outstanding fretwork and (believe it or not, it's a Gibson!) a perfectly cut nut.

The pickups sounded great, though I'm sure the amp had something to do with that, too. I really want either this or the new Melody Maker with two P90s. Fortunately, I'm broke!

Re: I'm having mad GAS for a Gibson...

Timmy, I really like the SG you're GASsing for but 12th fret anniversary logo's/ special edition logo's put me off.

I guess not all SG's are made equal, my Gordon Smith is the same thickness as a Gibson but has the side mount jack.

Re: I'm having mad GAS for a Gibson...

I think it looks great as is. It's really unique compared to other stuff on the market and pretty refreshing to see.

Re: I'm having mad GAS for a Gibson...

I'm a complete sucker for a natural finish. :D

I have to change out the pickup rings and toggle to either black or creme, however. And probably a more retro style of knobs.

Re: I'm having mad GAS for a Gibson...

Not to worry, once you've tried a few, you'll get over it... ;)

I still remember the first time I tried a Gibson. I was 16 years old, all my biggest guitar heroes used them and I was in love with the look. I had an Epiphone Les Paul at the time and I was on my way to having memorised all of Jimmy Page's riffs (hence, my username). I went into a guitar store and saw a beautiful white Les Paul Supreme, in my mind it was the top of the top, the best of the best, the highest of the Les Paul line.

I picked it up, plugged it in and played around for a bit and thought.. 'is this it? Is this all 4000 dollars gets you?'

Past then I tried a handful, but I never felt really interested in any Gibsons, not in the last 8 years or so, not until this guitar.

Re: I'm having mad GAS for a Gibson...

Nice guitar. Just picture a sports car like a 58 MG [ SG ]and a 1964 Ford LTD [ LP ]when you pick this guitar up to try it out. There is a giant difference between the instruments.

Really hope it is as nice as some of the 2013 SG's I've seen.

I have two 61 SG's, one of the first [w/WLH set] and last SG's [w/36 Anniversary set] made in 2013. Both of these guitars are flawless.

Back to the SG you are looking at, it is an awesome looking guitar. It reminds me of my old SG. Check out this past model. Looks like Gibson is updating an older Firebrand SG model. Here is my old Firebrand, I purchased used for $400.00 in about 1998 or 1999. Like the one you are interested in, it also does not have fingerboard binding. Its a nice touch if you ever have to have a one or a few frets replaced.

As much as I love natural finishes and SGs…that one just looks like a piece of furniture with pickups to me.

It is not, SG's arent actually that thin, i've seen quite a few mods with side mount plus a few factory ones, you can google them i believe. Also see that Gordon Smith above, those are great guitars from what i've heard. Handmade in UK i believe

Just give in. They will eventually get you: LP (Studio, Standard, Custom), SG, Explorer, V, 335, 137, 339, Moderne, Firebird (reverse, regular), something is gonna float your boat unless you are the hardest of the hard core Fender Fans.

Even Astro caved eventually.

By the way - Condemned; That Firebrand is SWEET!!!!! What pups you using in there?

..I'm actually in the process of selling a few pieces of gear, and theres a big voice in the back of my head saying 'Hey, you know what you'll have enough money for after you've sold these?' I've never been good at ignoring that voice. I even have an unused Custom 5/59 set sitting in one of my drawers in Canada... just in case.

Please make this thread go away!!! The GAS is bloating me.

I really, really like this SG special. And I love the finish. Sort of a "posh Norlin" vibe to it. Reminds me of a walnut SG custom from the seventies I had (Granted, it was a pig, but a good looking one!)

I'm glad to see Gibson targeting the 500-1000 dollar zone, with some interesting stuff, and focusing on the fretwork and nuts. Anyone can build a great guitar for $2500+, but a "first world" solid guitar for $900 is really a sweet spot. I think Fender has done the same thing with the American Specials and the new Standards (a little higher priced, but if you wait for a sale or coupon, you're under 1K). With the Melody Makers (2 P90) at 569 list, a buddy and I were joking that they were selling you the pickups and hardware retail and throwing in the guitar.

BTW, I think the return to maple necks is a positive move. Perhaps I'm unusual, but I would like to see more richilite fretboards. I have one on a Martin, and it's great. Put a richilite board on a maple neck, and that sucker is indestructible.
