I'm looking for a high headroom 6L6

I'm looking for a 6L6 that will keep its clean pretty well in my 63 bandmaster. What are my options? I want lots of high end chime, not much breakup, this needs to be a cleanish amp up to 4-5 on the dial.

NOS 7581A...nothing finer for cleans and BIG 6L6 tone and they will last about a decade if biased properly (I have one pair I bought in 1985 that still test good).

+1 on the 7581's, if you can find em for decent. I put a pair in a bassman to actually be used as bass amp once. They were so clean that it could be used as a bass amp.

I have a pair of Svetlana 6L6GC from before the Sovtec buy out. These are a good higher head room 6L6 too. Perhaps the =C= is about as clean, if you can't find any 7581's. I believe that there's an STR number for the 7581 too.

When you order your tubes from a tubes vendor (i recommend Doug @ www.dougstubes.com), just ask the vendor to give you a match pair or quad (which ever you need) to have high headroom.

They can use the Groove Tubes "headroom scaling" system. I believe it goes like this:
#1 to #3 (low headroom. will break up faster)
#4 to #6 (medium headroom. medium level breakup)
#7 to #10 (high headroom. very very little breakup).

see.. 6L6s are already a high headroom tube. so getting them tested for High headroom will give you more then enough clean headroom and very little break up as possible.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Re: I'm looking for a high headroom 6L6

so top picks for this would be:

NOS 7581A
=C= svetlana 6L6 or a GT 6L6R rated for high headroom

quick question-would a 6L6 amp like my 63 bandmaster work fine with KT88's?

The SED winged C 6L6's are VERY nice tubes that don't cost an arm and a leg. Don't put KT88's in a Bandmaster...

Re: I'm looking for a high headroom 6L6

im eyeballing a pair of 7581A's at KCANOS tubes, should i go GE for 150, or phillips for 100?

Re: I'm looking for a high headroom 6L6

it's not really about 'trying something else', it's just about trying something that sounds better than my year and a half old mesa 6L6's that have been getting cranked 3 times a week.

They're starting to lose headroom and bite so i suspect a melt down in tone soon, im just in the market to get a more authentic, big fender tone using tubes that are TOUGH. I think the 7581A's might be the ticket.

Re: I'm looking for a high headroom 6L6

I got some NOS 7581's from KCA for Evan's new amp. I've not tried them yet though, so reports to follow hopefully by tomorrow night.

Re: I'm looking for a high headroom 6L6

From what i heard and read, the 7581's lend to a really tight, sustaining clean blues tone, quite SRV ish if used with a strat. They get more headroom and could handle more of a beating, yet they do not demand more heater current-nice deal in my book.

Re: I'm looking for a high headroom 6L6

I need some new 6l6s for my amp too.. at our practices i have to turn the volume up just below breakup to stay in the mix.

What about the other side of this.. if they are rated for higher headroom, what happens when you want loads of gain versus low headroom tubes?

Re: I'm looking for a high headroom 6L6

Well...do you want a hamburger or do you want a burrito? The question is about tubes with lots of headroom---7581A is probably the primo 6L6 variant for this. It doesn't squash like a Tung Sol 5881. 'You pays you money and you makes you choice...'

BTW---the Philips are a good tube for 100 a pair. They will last a LONG time.
