Im really starting to dig DJ Ashba in GN'R

Ashba "Ballad of Death" solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jez2y3JmpBY

As much as I like Slash, I think Ashba is doing a really good job in gnr. Really digging his modern bluesy/shred style he has goin on with those les pauls. I really respect his artistic side too with all the artwork he does to his guitars and such

He uses Alnico II pro's in neck and bridge I assume?

Re: Im really starting to dig DJ Ashba in GN'R

He's good but between him and Ron Thal in GN'R I'm choosing Ron Thal every time. THAT guy is a phenomenal player and songwriter. Just an all around amazing musician.

Re: Im really starting to dig DJ Ashba in GN'R

Ya he can shred like no other, but i like ashba for the same reason i like slash. For the feeling they put into their playing. Bumblefoot can shred and play a million miles and hour, but then again i dont like guys like that because they just play fast with no feeling. He still is a good player though

Re: Im really starting to dig DJ Ashba in GN'R

Oh man, Ron's soooooo much more than shred. A quick listen to his solo work would make that very clear. Even in the 'slow soulful' category I'd take Thal hands down. But it's not a competition or anything. I just think DJ gets more attention because of his image. But still, a great player.

Oh man, you'll love it! I've got a bunch of his stuff up on my youtube channel. Give it a search! I recommend it all. Fantastic singer too!

Have you heard DJ's solo stuff from back in the day? I've got his old Addiction to the Friction album. Fun shreddy stuff.

no, the only other thing ive heard from ashba is his work with sixx am

Re: Im really starting to dig DJ Ashba in GN'R

Listen to Ron Thal again. He did the solo for This I Love (Like, the only really good song worth looking up on Chinese Democracy). That solo beats Sweet Child O' Mine and November Rain's outro solo, Don't Cry, and is still a bit better than the solos for Civil War, You Could Be Mine, Double Talkin' Jive, The Garden, and Rocket Queen. Maybe even the best GNR solo period.

Here it is. Start at 2:21.

Re: Im really starting to dig DJ Ashba in GN'R

Sweet, another DJ Ashba fan! He's probably my favourite guitarist right about now, and has been for about a year (just short of how long i've acctually been playing)

I know, he's not an incredible player, but I love the mix of bluesy feeling with the hard rock edge and the odd bit of shredding, I would have to say, he's the guitarist I probably would relate my playing style to, but I like things much heavier as well, and incorperate that into my playing...

I seriously wish Sixx:A.M would tour, that would be awesome (but even if the did, I doubt they would come to South Australia)

Have you seen the videos on his youtube channel of him showing you how to play a few of the Sixx:A.M songs? I think thats really good of him....

Edit: I saw in a rig rundown with him, he said that he re-wires him Les Pauls and has JB's in the bridge and Alnico II pros in the neck, lemme find the video....

There we go, yep, JB's in the bridge and Alnico II pro's in the neck... and I know JB's are picky in mahogany guitars, so I wonder how many LP's he's been through to find one's that work with the JB?

Ya u saw that video too, but the Duncan website says he only uses A2P's, so that's why I was wondering....cuz I know JB's have a history of not working in LP's

Re: Im really starting to dig DJ Ashba in GN'R

...in some LPs.

They DO seem to be picky about the guitars they get put into (mainly mahogany LPs). But there doesn't seem to be as much a problem with an A2 in it.

Ya and I would think it would be the other way. I'm not a fan of A2's in lea Pauls, but people rave about A2 JB's in les pauls

Ya that song is my favorite one on the album. Love the solo. I didn't know Thall did that one? I thought it was buckethead

Re: Im really starting to dig DJ Ashba in GN'R

An interesting phenomenum to say the least.

I can't say enought good things about my A2 Distortion (at least similar if not the same wind as the JB) in a mahogany LP type guitar.

Re: Im really starting to dig DJ Ashba in GN'R

I swear, every time I see his name, I feel like I'm reading a bad word!

Agreed.

Have you ever seen the video on youtube of him going over his gear?
He has a Les Paul Standard that he uses to put out cigarettes. I don't care how good of a player he is, too me he will always be the doosh who is in a G 'N R cover band.

He is actually a really artistic dude. And if I got guitars from Gibson for free and had as much money as he did, I'd put my cigarettes out one of my les pauls too lol

Re: Im really starting to dig DJ Ashba in GN'R

He is so artistic that he can't come up with an original shtick. Looks like a Slash wannabe. All the way to the top hat and les Paul's. Didnt he play Ernie Ball guitars before guns?

Yeah, he used Ernie Ball Axis guitars when recording the original Sixx:A.M record, As you can see in this video....

Oh, and he's given up smoking, so that guitar won't be burnt anymore...

Edit: I personally don't mind his look, as he's looked like that way before he joined GnR. I can see the similarities, but I don't care, I just enjoy the music...
