I'm split on picking technique

I would appreciate some advice about my current picking habits.

I started playing with a thumb pick, and that's what I'm best at. I can play with a regular pick, but anything that I can play with a regular pick I can play with a thumb pick, and then some.

The split is whether I should try using a thumb pick and one finger pick like I do with acoustics (the only way to play some songs correctly), or whether I should just give up a bad habit of thumb picking, suck it up, and learn how to pick like a normal person.

Any pros/cons would be helpfull as well.

Re: I'm split on picking technique

I wouldn't call it a bad habbit, rather an alternate technique.

I think it'd be a good idea to learn how to use a regular pick effectively, so as to give yourself the choice of which to use. There's no reason whatsoever stopping you from practising with both.

Thanks for the response, but I'm going to bump this one.

Re: I'm split on picking technique

a normal pick has a big advantage ,you can move it between your fingers to create more bolt ,soft or more "screaming" tones. But this is a disadvantage too.sometimes it moves when you don't want it to move too.so if you find the right pick with the right tone ,is better than anything else.
Like Lord Raiden says ,"THere is no knowledge that is not power"!!!

Re: I'm split on picking technique

Thanks, I guess I'll just learn what I need to for which ever song I'm currently learning.

Re: I'm split on picking technique

Only if you can justify doing it. If your really good with thumb picking and not just getting by then why switch? If you've sensed that you have a difficiency then of course exploring other methods is the thing to do.
