Import Jackson suprise

Went to GC today and they had the Import model Adrian Smith guitar that I really like and they also had a used US version. I played both as I had to compare. Visually, the differences were US had brand name pups, USA on the headstock, darker fingerboard, tighter neck pocket, and some figuring in the headstock maple. Unplugged, the Import had better feel and more robust sound. Plugged in, they were quite similar. I could tell a small improvement of what I believe the pickups gave the US model. Fretwork was very nice on the import. I thought the import actually played better. (Im sure the US could be set up more for my liking) personally, I couldnt see $1000 difference in them. Id be inclined to go with the import and change pups...

Just my thoughts. flame on...

From a quick glance at ye olde website:

Quatersawn neck vs. whatever-sawn neck.
OFR vs. Floyd Special.
Ebony vs. rosewood on the non-maple-board option.
Alder body vs. basswood.
Made in the U.S.A. doesn't exactly come free for Jackson, or anyone else building stuff.

For what it's worth, I love my Jackson imports, but every USA Select I've played has destroyed them.

Yeah, I know there are some other build differences, but I was just saying visually they were similar and the weight was nearly identical. the import just didnt seem that inferior playability wise. I do agree that some of the new import line neck thru models feel kinda cheap in comparison to USA ones.

They use CTS pots and Switchcraft on the USA models.

If I were you, I would go with the import. It sounds as if you really like this guitar, but would you rather spend a $1,000 more just to have the Made in the U.S.A. label on the guitar? That's your call, but I would follow my gut instinct and probably go with the import. You said it sounded better at least acoustically and it has a real good feel to it. If you really wanted, you can swap out pick ups in the future if you score a real good deal on a set. The pots are not expensive and you can always swap those out if need be. There are other imports that may not be as good as some U.S. made guitars which is supposed to be the case, but not necessarily. In this case you spotted a winner and I would follow up before someone else does.;)

I had the complete opposite reaction. Loved the USA model. Thought it felt and sounded incredible. I also thought the import felt like a cheap knock off. But sounds like you found a good one. Or a bad USA one? I say get the one you like.
