Impressed w/ MIM Strat!

Walked into the main music store in Auckland today looking for a quick gas fix-it :) and spotted a metallic seafoam green strat hanging up on the wall. Gave it a quick play (didn't plug it on tho) and tho the action was a touch on the high, I gotta say it played wonderfully. Tight pocket, nice fret detail, solid construction. The only things I saw wrong with it was that the grain was a bit funky on the neck and that it lacked the hand rolled edges (no biggie, still played great).

All of a sudden I got a better respect for Fender QC now...

some of 'em mex strats are really good- feel + tone. i came across 2 recently, re-issue '50s strat & the splatter design

Re: Impressed w/ MIM Strat!

The MIMs are fine instruments. I remember a first-run bass I had that was a nightmare.

Let's not forget....they also panned the Made In Japan ones for a good number of years as well. And now look what high esteem they're held in!

Re: Impressed w/ MIM Strat!

MIM strats are just fine. I'd go for a USA-made one only if it was a special edition w/ features not available on a MIM.

Re: Impressed w/ MIM Strat!

I like the MIM strats. There is nothing wrong with them. (well, most of them)
I think for the most part they are pretty good. Over the years I have owned 4 of them with no complaints about the ones I have owned.

Re: Impressed w/ MIM Strat!

i have a 2003 now which i like better than my 2001 that im selling. but the older ones i think had better bridges or at least better trem blocks. with the surfers that i put in, the guitar sounds great!! im usually an alnico II guy (aps2 and texas hots) for lower output strat pups and these are brighter and spankier which is nice as an alternative. but im gonna replace the block, the stock one is half the size it should be for crying out loud.

MIM fenders are great deals.
a couple months ago i played this fat strat and it just screamed!!!!!!!! all stock too!! only thing wrong was this chip out of the body. but if i had the $$ i would've gotten it.

Re: Impressed w/ MIM Strat!

I've got one... a 2001 i think, It plays really well. and solid as a brick. I just haven't found quite the right setup for it yet (pickups) I think I need to break down and buy some Duncans or EMGs for it. Neither the fenders or Gibsons (from my SG) did the trick.
